In an argument sparked by the Biden administration's proposal to amend the legislation, Samantha Ponder, the current host of Sunday NFL Countdown on ESPN, spoke out against trans people in sport on Wednesday. In the month of Women's History Month, ESPN has been devoted to transgender people in sport, and transgender swimmer Lia Thomas was included in their segment devoted to Women's History Month last month. Title IX, which was introduced in 1972, prohibits sex discrimination in any school or other educational program that receives federal support. The Biden administration suggested a change to the legislation, which would prohibit a blanket ban on trans people in school sports. Any school that introduced such a ban will no longer be eligible for federal support. According to the Biden administration, they find it unlikely that baning trans children from participating. The scheme would, however, call for a ban on trans athletes for 'fairness in sport,' allowing for a ban on athletes for 'fairness in sports,' opening the way for a potential ban on athletes like Thomas.
