Samantha Eggar Life

Victoria Louise Therese Eggar (born 5 March 1939) is an English-American film, stage, television, and voice actress.

She rose to prominence in William Wyler's dramatic The Collector (1965), earning her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress after starting her career in Shakespearean theater. Emma Fairfax appeared in Doctor Dolittle (1967) and the American drama The Molly Maguires (1970).

Eggar moved to the United States and Canada in the early 1970s, including The Dead Are Alive (1972), The Uncanny (1977), and David Cronenberg's cult thriller The Brood (1979). Eggar has performed as Hera in Walt Disney's Hercules (1997), and she has appeared in several video games, including Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned, and 007: Nightfire.

Charlotte Devane, a recurring character on Fantasy Island, and a recurring appearance in the soap opera All My Children in 2000, is included in her television appearances.

Early life

Samantha Eggar was born in Hampstead, London, to Ralph Alfred James Eggar (a British Army brigadier) and Muriel Olga Palache-Bouma, both of Dutch and Portuguese descent. The initials of each of her parents' first children were derived from the initials of the two triplets of given names. During World War II, her family immigrated to rural Bledlow, Buckinghamshire, where she spent her childhood.

Eggar was born in Woking, Surrey, as a Roman Catholic and educated. Eggar reflected on her time at convent school, saying, "The nuns didn't have much success with me." I have always had a tumultuous temper." "I actually killed one of the nuns," a narrator says. Samantha was the first name she went by at age 16. Although Eggar expressed an interest in acting at a young age, her parents had pushed her away from a career in the theatre. She was offered a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts but she opted instead to study fashion at the Thanet School of Art. She enrolled at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London after completing her studies.

Eggar began performing in a variety of Shakespearean companies, most notably in the 1962 revival of A Midsummer Night's Dream directed by Tony Richardson. She appeared on stage in Douglas Seale's Landscape with Figures, where she was discovered by a talent scout, and from there was cast in the biographical film Dr. Crippen (1962) opposite Donald Pleasence. In 1962, she appeared in The Wild and the Willing, and the following year she appeared in a George Devine production of Twelfth Night.

In 1965, Eggar appeared in William Wyler's thriller The Collector, as a kidnap victim. She received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and received a Golden Globe Award for her role. In 1966, she was named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, and later that year she was named Best Actress. Miranda in The Collector Eggar has said: "I had the greatest relationship on set with William Wyler." The tension on set was real. And if the drama wasn't there, if I didn't exude exactly what he needed – well, Willi just pour cold water over me."

Eggar appeared in the comedy Walk, Don't Run (1966) with Cary Grant (his last motion picture) and Jim Hutton, as well as Emma Fairfax in Richard Fleischer's musical interpretation of Doctor Dolittle (1967). She'll continue to appear in a number of horror films, including The Dead Are Alive (1972), A Name for Evil (1973), The Uncanny (1978), and David Cronenberg's cult sci film The Brood (1979). She produced Curtains, a Canadian slasher film that was released in 1983.

Maggie Gioberti appeared in 'The Vintage Years,' the pilot for the series Falcon Crest, but Susan Sullivan replaced her as the series went into production. She appeared twice on The Love Boat, the first charming ship's captain, as fortune-teller Mary-Louise Murphy in 'A Funny Valentine' on March 2, 1979. Meg Chase, the mother of Billy (played by Philip Brown), who appeared on 'Touchdown Twins' on February 14, 1981, has a crush on Eggar's character. Eggar appeared in the sci-fi drama The Astronaut's Wife (1999), which starred Johnny Depp.

She appeared on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation's sister, Robert, and as Sarah Templeton, the wife of House Speaker Nathan Templeton (Donald Sutherland), and on the short-lived television series Commander in Chief, which starred Geena Davis. Charlotte Devane appeared briefly in the American soap opera All My Children in the year 2000. Sister Vivian appeared in the first season of Cold Case, episode 14 ("The Boy in the Box") in 2003. In season 11, episode 11 ("Lines in the Sand") of the Fox television series Mental, she appeared as the mother of Jack and Becky Gallagher in 2009.
