Samuel Truett Cathy (March 14, 1921-2014) was an American businessman, entrepreneur, writer, and philanthropist.
In 1946, he founded Chick-fil-A, a fast food restaurant chain.
Early life
Cathy was born in Eatont, Georgia, on March 14, 1921, the son of Lilla James (née Kimball) and Joseph Benjamin Cathy. He attended Boys High School (renamed Henry W. Grady High School in 1947 and Midtown High School in 2020) in Atlanta and later served in the United States Army during World War II. Cathy founded the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain in Hapeville, Georgia, in 1946, with the Dwarf Grill, whose name came because of its small size. He created the chicken sandwich that later became Chick-fil-A's most popular menu item. The original restaurant (since renamed Dwarf House) is still open, and the company operates other Dwarf House locations in the metro Atlanta area. Trudy, Don "Bubba," and Dan, his three children were born.
Career
Cathy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Georgia, and taught Sunday School there for more than 50 years. The Bible, he said, is his life's textbook. All of the company's locations, whether company-owned or franchised, have been closed on Sundays in order to encourage staff to attend church and spend time with their families due to their strong religious convictions. Cathy was working six days a week in multiple shifts, and this program came into existence. On Sundays, he called off.
Cathy wrote five books: Eat Mor Chikin, a memoir book that reads more people, It's Easier to Succeed, Not to Fail, an illustration of his company's growth in When Do You Do It, Truett? and a final book on the importance of money in today's culture titled Wealth, Is It Worth It? He also contributed to the anthologies What My Parents Did Right and Conversations on Success, as well as co-wrote with Ken Blanchard Generosity Factor: Discovering the Joy of Giving Your Time, Talent, and Treasure. In his honor, McDonough-Fayetteville Road in Fayette, Henry, and Clayton counties has been named in honor. Cathy said that Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich was one of the best motivational books for growing inspiration.
He opened Upscale Pizza in Fayetteville, Georgia, in April 2008. He resigned as both chairman and CEO of Chick-fil-A in November 2013, leaving his son, Dan Cathy, to fill the roles.
