"Hedgie" Ryan Nicholas Sandes (born in Cape Town on March 10, 1982, is a South African trail runner.

He became the first runner to win all four of the Deserts races in Argentina, the Gobi Desert in China, the Sahara Desert in Egypt, and finally Antarctica.

“Ryan Sandes, clearly one of the top endurance athletes in the country,” the event's founder and CEO, Mary Gadams, states. Only 81 people have completed all four trails to date.

The 4 Deserts Grand Slam has been run by 11 athletes, that is, walking the four trails in a calendar year (from 1 January to December of the same year).

The 4 Deserts Challenge was featured on a list of the ten most demanding endurance races in the country in 2010, second in 2009 RacingThePlanet Namibia and champion of the Jungle Ultra Marathon in Pará, Brazil, setting a new course record. Sandes completed the 2011 Leadville Trail 100 in a record of 16:46:54, more than half an hour ahead of runner Dylan Bowman.

He won the 2012 North Face 100 in Australia in a record of 9:22:45, and had been ranked 3rd in 2011. Sandes beat Russell Pasche's record for the 90K Fish River Canyon hiking trail from 10:54 to 6:57 in August 2012. Sandes won the second race in the Ultra-Trail World Series Tour, The North Face Transgrancanaria, on March 1, 2014.
