Career

Coogler produced four short films, three of which were nominated or received multiple awards while attending the University of Cinematic Arts in the United States. Locks (2009) screened at the Tribeca Film Festival and received the Dana and Albert Broccoli Award for Filmmaking Excellence. Fig (2011), directed by Alex George Pickering, earned the DGA Student Film Award at the American Black Film Festival, and was nominated for Outstanding Independent Short Film at the Black Reel Awards. Gap (2011), written by Carol S. Lashof, was named as the best in Directing at the Jack Nicholson Award in 2011.

Coogler produced and directed his first feature film, Fruitvale Station, which told the story of Oscar Grant's last 24 hours (played by Michael B. Jordan), who was shot to death by a police officer at Oakland's Fruitvale BART station on January 1, 2009. The film, directed by Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker, premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the top Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic competition and was released in theaters on July 20, 2013. After the film's theatrical run, it grossed over $17 million globally.

The film, according to Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, is "a gut punch of a movie" and "an unstoppable cinematic power." Coogler's "hand-held shooting style evokes Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's spiritually alert naturalism," A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote. The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy called it "a memorable debut" and "a strong dramatic feature film" on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critical consensus that reads: "Passionate and well-acted, Fruitvale Station serves as a celebration of life, a condemnation of death, and a triumph for actor Michael B. "Jason" is the narrator. The film appeared on several analysts' top ten lists of the best films of 2013.

In 2015, Coogler directed and co-wrote with Aaron Covington in his second film, Creed, a spin-off of the Rocky films. Michael B. Jordan played Donnie, Apollo Creed's son, who is trained and mentored by his father's old friend and former foe Rocky Balboa, was played by Sylvester Stallone. Critcs and audiences praised it, and worldwide, it earned over $173 million. Stallone received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor, Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture, among other prizes, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2018, Coogler co-write and direct the Marvel film Black Panther, making him the first black Marvel Studios director. Chadwick Boseman, the titular figure who is crowned king of Wakanda following his father's death, is portrayed by Michael B. Jordan), who wants to abandon the country's isolationist policies and launch a global revolution.

The film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and broke several box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker, the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time and the second-highest-grossing film of 2018. Black Panther was also a critical success. "Black Panther raises superhero cinema to new heights while simultaneously introducing one of the MCU's most absorbing tales and introducing some of the MCU's most fully realized characters," Rotten Tomatoes' critical consensus says. The film was also noted for its representation of black people and Afrofuturism as well as subject matter related to Afrofuturism.

The film was nominated for seven awards at the 91st Academy Awards, three of which were chosen for three, and received several others. Black Panther is the first superhero film to be nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture, and the first MCU film to win several categories (those being for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score).

Coogler appeared on Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King, in 2021, which was centered on Hampton's betrayal of Hampton (played by LaKeith Stanfield).

The film received critical acclaim and earned Coogler, Shaka King, and Charles D. King an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, the first for an all-black production team. Judas and the Black Messiah received five other Oscar nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for both Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield, and Best Supporting Actor for Kaluuya and Best Original Song ("Fight for You"). Kaluuya has also received Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actor Guild Awards, and BAFTA Awards for his work as Hampton.

Coogler appeared as co-producer on the Space Jam sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy, starring LeBron James. The film received mostly mixed-to-negative feedback and was a financial loss, grossing $163.7 million globally on a budget of $150 million.

Coogler is expected to co-write and direct Black Panther's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will be released in the United States on November 11, 2022.

Coogler was a producer on ESPN's 30 for 30 film The Day the Series Stopped, about Game Three of the 1989 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics, when an earthquake rattled the Bay Area to its core.

In January 2013, Coogler said he was working on a graphic novel and young adult book based on an undisclosed topic.

Coogler will appear with Jordan for the fourth time in the forthcoming film Wrong Answer, which is based on the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal.

Coogler served as an executive producer on Creed II and has written the story outline for the forthcoming Creed III.

Proximity Media, Coogler's production company, has signed an exclusive five-year contract with Disney, which includes a Disney+ television series based in Black Panther's home country, Wakanda. Proximity will also coproduce Ironheart for the streaming service, while Dominique Thorne will debut as the titular character in Wakanda Forever.
