Ruben Neves Career

Club career

Neves, born in Mozelos (Santa Maria da Feira), Aveiro District, Neves, grew up supporting FC Porto and joined the club's youth team at the age of eight. He spent a season on loan at Padroense, which was also the under-16 team; during his time with the academy, reserve team boss Luis Castro referred to him as a player with "extraordinary mental attributes, as well as technical and tactical skills."

Neves had planned to skip Porto's under-19s and instead play with the reserves ahead of the 2014-15 season. Following Mikel Agui's illness, however, he was called to join the main squad's pre-season trainings by Julen Lodz. He made his Primeira Liga debut on August 15, 2014, when he started and scored in a 2–0 home victory over Martimo, becoming the youngest player in the team's history to score a goal in the competition. He played his first match in the UEFA Champions League five days later, defeating Lille 1–0, setting a new record that had not been set by Cristiano Ronaldo by being the youngest Portuguese to participate in the tournament.

Neves sustained an injury to his right knee during a Champions League group stage match against Shakhtar Donetsk on December 10, 2014, ahead of a collision with Alex Teixeira in midfield. The club announced that he sustained a sprain at the end of the game, which caused visible damage to the internal lateral ligaments. In a 3–1 home victory over Unio da Madeira in the Taça da Liga, he returned to the pitch after nearly a month on the sidelines. Casemiro filled in midfield after his injury, but the majority of the season came after the Brazilian in the pecking order.

Neves, age 18 years and 221 days, became the youngest player to start as captain in the Champions League on October 20, 2015, leading Porto to a 2–0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the group stage and beating previous record holder Rafael van der Vaart, who served the city since September 16th. In a 2–1 victory over Paços de Ferreira on December 5th, he tied for the youngest player to make 50 appearances for the club, beating players like Fernando Gomes and Jaime Magalhues.

Neves signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Championship for an undisclosed fee, likely to be in the region of £15.8 million, which was a club and league record fee. On his arrival, he was reunited with former Porto boss Nuno Esprito Santo. In a 3–2 away win over Hull City on August 15, he scored his first goal. Neves was nominated for the EFL Championship Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season in April 2018, and he was also recognized in the Team of the Season, as well as colleagues Conor Coady and John Ruddy. His team was eventually promoted to champions after he scored six goals in 42 appearances, many of which were from outside of the box. He walked away with the Player of the Season, Player of the Season, and Goal of the Season awards at the end of the season. On April 11, 2018, he was also given the EFL Goal of the Year award for his effort against Derby County at Molineux.

In July 2018, Neves announced that the player had signed a new deal that would continue until June 2023. He scored his first Premier League goal and assisted Ral Jiménez in the latter's competitive debut as his team came from behind to draw 2–2 against Everton in their first match of the season. His appearance in the match, as well as compatriots Rui Patro Jotinho, Joo Moutinho, Diogo Jota, and Hélder Costa, saw the club smash the league record for the most Portuguese players named in a starting lineup, which included him.

Neves made his 50th appearance for Wolves on Monday and set the tone by playing in the build-up for Matt Doherty's winning goal in a 1–0 win over Crystal Palace. "A venomous dipping shot from 31 yards (28 m) that defeated Simon Mignolet at his near post in the FA Cup in January," was the best goal of the third round by visitors to BBC Sport's website.

With a penalty shoot-out win over Reading in the third round on September 25, 2019, Neves became Wolves' club captain for the first time. On March 6, 2021, he made his 100th appearance in the Premier League in a goalless draw at Aston Villa. It was revealed in May that his deal was not in effect until 2024.

In a 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on February 13, 2022, Neves made his 200th competitive appearance for Wolves in all leagues. He assisted in the only goal by Coady in a victory over Everton that gave them their 1,000th victory in top-flight football (over 67 seasons dating back to 1888) on March 13th, his 25th birthday, as well as the club's first league double over that opponent since 1972–73. Days later, his knee injury from a home game against Leeds United ruled him out for a month. He returned on April 30th against Brighton & Hove Albion, but was forced to leave at halftime.

Neves took the captain's armband against Leeds United on August 6, 2022, when Conor Coady was kept on the replacement bench for his first game of the 2022-23 season. After Coady's departure on loan to Everton, Neves was made Wolves' captain on a full-time basis. In a 1–1 Premier League draw with Newcastle United at Molineux on 28 August 2022, Neves scored his first goal of the season and his twentieth in a Wolves shirt.

International career

Neves was captain of Portugal at the 2014 European Under-17 Championship, assisting the country in qualifying the country in the semi-finals. By a panel of UEFA journalists, he was selected among the top ten talents of the tournament for his performances.

Neves, who was still 17 years old, was summoned by Rui Jorge to be a member of the under-21 team on August 29th. In the play-off round of the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, he scored his first goal against the Netherlands on October 14 in a 5–4 home win over the Netherlands.

Neves, 18, 18 years and 3 months, set a new record by playing five minutes in the Czech Republic's group stage opener, defeating England 1–0. It was his first appearance as Portugal reached the final, where they lost to Sweden in a penalty shoot-out.

Neves was called up to the senior team on November 10, 2015, ahead of friendlies against Russia and Luxembourg as a fitness substitute for Joo Moutinho. He made his debut in the game, losing 17 minutes in Krasnodar's 1–0 loss before winning the entire 2–0 victory against the latter, sharing the midfield with Porto teammates Danilo Pereira and André André.

Neves was selected by FIFA's head coach Fernando Santos for a preliminary 35-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but he was unable to make the final 23-man squad.

Neves defeated Switzerland 3–1 in the semi-finals, but was dropped from the starting eleven against the Netherlands for the more defensive Danilo. In a match at his former club ground, the Drago, he came on in extra time for William Carvalho as the Portuguese defeated 1–0.

Neves was one of four Wolves to be named in the Portugal squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He appeared in the postponed game on June 23rd as a replacement in a 2–2 group draw with France in Budapest.
