Life and career

Rosalyn Bowen was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Gertrude and Thomas Bowen, who worked with the Board of Education, was born in Rosalyn Bowen. She is a 1969 graduate of Mackenzie High School. Ryan spent 13 years in Detroit before a friend suggested that she audition for Ain't Misbehavin, a Broadway musical revue starring Fats Waller's music. Her audition was fruitful, and she appeared on stage just ten days later. Ryan went on to appear in numerous Broadway musicals, including the Tony Award-winning Chicago, where she holds the longest tenure for the character Matron "Mama" Morton. A Christmas Carol, Dreamgirls, One Mo' Time, and The Pajama Game were among Ryan's performances.

Ryan is best known for her appearances on television and film as Amelia Hetebrink on Amen, Mrs. Dixon on Good News and Flo Anderson on All About the Andersons. She also appeared on an episode of Barbershop as a guest star. In Disney's animated film Hercules and Hercules: The Animated Series, she was the voice of Thalia, the Muse of Comedy. Bubbie the whale's voice appears in the 2008 animated television film series The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. She appeared in the films I Love My Wife, The Invention of Lying, and Waiting for Forever. In the animated film Kick Buttowski: Kick's Teacher Ms. Fitzpatrick, she portrays Kick's coach Ms. Fitzpatrick. In The Looney Tunes Exhibition, she was the voice of Witch Lezah. In the Adventure Time series "Fionna and Cake," "Bad Little Boy," "The Prince Who Wanted Everything," and "Five Short Tables," she has appeared alongside Jake's female and feline counterpart Cake. She has also appeared in TVOne's The Rickey Smiley Show.
