The invasion of corporate chains by a pioneertown in 1946 could jeopardize the town's historic fabric, which was built as a Wild West movie set in 1946

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 6, 2023
The isolated town near Joshua Tree National Park in California has adapted to its own unique character and tourist appeal since being built in the 1940s as a shooting location for Western films and TV shows. However, residents of Pioneertown fear that the town's historic 'Mane Street' could be overrun with strip malls, gas stations, and restaurant chains like Starbucks, after county officials introduced a new map for standardizing zoning codes. They've started a petition urging the county to implement special measures that would shield the town's Old West charm and character.

Whiskey Flat, a California megadrought, is a renowned ghost town

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 9, 2022
The man-made Lake Isabella has shrunk and allowed access to the foundations of Whiskey Flat (top right), the infamous Wild West town home to the gold rush, shootings, and Native American famine. The town and its people (left) also inspired many westerns, including John Wayne's 'Stagecoach,' before the lake was flooded in 1953. Chuck Barbee, a former cinematographer and film director who lives in the town that sprang up after the fall of Whiskey Flat, said that although the water level was worrying, the area will continue to prosper due to the nearby Kern River. The Kern is still a mighty river,' he said. 'And there may be another chapter in this area.' After all, we're just another part of the country's long and prolific past.'
