Roy Makaay Career

Club career

He was first recognized as a skilled striker while playing for Vitesse in the 1990s and later with Deportivo La Coruja.

Makaay was signed by Deportivo La Corua from Tenerife in July 1999 for a transfer fee of PTAS10 million. He made his league debut on August 22, 1999 in the first game of the season, where he scored a hat-trick to give Deportivo a 4–1 home win over Alavés. Makaay scored a total of 22 goals in 36 appearances in the 1999-2000 season, including braces against Barcelona, Real Oviedo, and Atlético Madrid, as well as one in the Galician club's final match against Espanyol, which earned the Galician club their first La Liga title.

As Dépor advanced to the 2002 Copa del Rey Final on March 6, 2002, Makaay was an unused substitute; Deportivo claimed the trophy for the second time in their history, beating Real Madrid 2–1.

With his 29 goals, he became Europe's top scorer for the 2002-2003 season.

In Deportivo's 3–2 victory over Bavarians on 19 September 22, he made his first match with Bayern Munich during the 2002-2003 UEFA Champions League season when he scored a hat-trick.

Bayern Munich kept an eye on Makaay throughout the entire season, finally fending off stiff rivalries from Manchester United and Chelsea to get their man. In the summer 2003, a Deportivo club record fee of €18.75 million was agreed to him. During his four seasons at Bayern, he scored 78 Bundesliga and 17 UEFA Champions League goals.

In a 4–0 Champions League group stage victory over Ajax on September 29, he scored a hat-trick, placing him in a select group of players to have scored a Champions League hat-trick at two clubs.

Makaay scored Bayern Munich's 3,000th Bundesliga goal on August 21, 2006, marking his 21st Bundesliga goal. In the game against FC Schalke 04. on March 31, 2007, he scored his 100th Bayern Munich goal. 04. It was his 75th Bundesliga goal and 100th competitive goal since joining Bayern Munich in 2003.

Makaay scored the quickest goal in Champions League history on March 7, 2007; he hit the ball in just 10.12 seconds to help Bayern reverse a first-leg deficit and knock Real Madrid out of the tournament in the round of 16. Madrid kicked off, but Roberto Carlos struggled to control the backpass, allowing Bayern's Hasan Salihamidi to grab the ball and pass it to Makaay, who tapped it past goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Makaay returned to the Netherlands in 2007-08, when Feyenoord agreed to a three-year contract worth €5 million in June 2007. Makaay's decision to leave was influenced by Bayern Munich's decision to bring forwards Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose.

Makaay was instrumental in the club's triumph in the KNVB Cup in his first season, scoring 7 goals in 5 games.

Makaay retired at the end of the 2009–10 season, scoring a hat-trick in his last match against Heerenveen.

International career

Makaay's national team's record of 15 goals, which was a record shared with Arnold Bruggink, was defeated by the Dutch U-21 national team before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar surpassed their record in 2006.

Due to players such as Patrick Kluivert, Dennis Bergkamp, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, his international caps for the Dutch national team were limited. Makaaye was, however, capped for his country at Euro 2000 and Euro 2004. He scored against Latvia in the first round of the second tournament.

Makaay was selected as one of three overage athletes to represent the Netherlands in 2008, where he captained the team to a quarter-final loss to eventual champions Argentina.

Coaching career

He was appointed as a youth mentor for Feyenoord's academy after his retirement. He was also working as a front coach for the club, both with the first team and youth teams, as well as other sports.

He was appointed first-team coach to Rangers' Giovanni van Bronckhorst on November 18, 2021.
