Career

Cochrane's first appearances included participation in a drug docudrama on Saturday Night with Connie Chung (1989) and an appearance in a H.E.L.P. episode. (1990): A.k.a. In A Kiss Before Dying, he made his film debut (with about fifteen seconds of screen time) before going on to his first major role as Jeff Goldblum's son in Fathers & Sons.

In 1993's Dazed and Confused, Cochrane's breakout role was when he was cast as stoner Ron Slater, a film that Entertainment Weekly ranked #3 in their "50 Best High School Movies" of all time. Billy Mack, a psychotic, appeared in Renée Zellweger's action/comedy Love and a.45 in 1994, Cochrane followed up with a strong show as the psychotic Billy Mack. Cochrane found success with his latest appearance in the poorly-received Empire Records and appeared in Hart's War starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell. He appeared in Richard Linklater's film A Scanner Darkly (2006).

In CSI: Tim Speedle's seasons 1–3, Cochrane appeared as a CSI Tim Speedle. In the episode "Bang, Bang, Your Debt," Cochrane reprised his role as Tim Speedle, as a hallucination to Detective Eric Delko in season 6.

In 2015, Cochrane appeared as Boston mobster Stephen Flemmi in the true-crime film Black Mass, which starred Johnny Depp.
