Coaching career
By Munster, O'Gara had been given a one-year contract extension, but instead of taking a coaching role with French club Racing 92, O'Gara took up a coaching role. O'Gara served principally as a defense coach with Racing from July 2013. In 2016, he agreed to a contract extension with Racing 92 until 2019. Johnny Sexton, a former Ireland colleague who expressed his delight at being able to work with his former Ireland rival, O'Gara, was one of many. In June 2017, O'Gara was a skills coach in Ireland's one-off test match against the United States.
Racing 92 decided to let O'Gara leave early in November 2017, so he could join the Crusaders coaching team in New Zealand. On January 1, 2018, he began as assistant backs coach with the Crusaders and then extending his contract for the 2019 Super Rugby season in June 2018. O'Gara had a great success in his first season in Christchurch, winning their ninth Super Rugby title and defending the trophy in the 2019 Super Rugby Championship, defeating the Argentinian side Jaguares 19–3 in O'Gara's final match as part of the Crusaders coaching staff.
After finishing his tenure with the Crusaders 2019 Super Rugby season, O'Gara joined French Top 14 club La Rochelle to replace Xavier Garbajosa as their new head coach, ahead of the 2019-20 Top 14 season. Former Leinster forwards coach and Ulster head coach Jono Gibbes was the club's head coach and head coach at the time.
Following La Rochelle's 27–16 away victory over Gloucester in the last 16 of the 2020–21 Challenge Cup, O'Gara was interviewed post-match by BT Sport, revealing how his rugby philosophy had evolved whilst coaching in France and New Zealand, namely that KBA - Keep Ball Alive - became intrinsic to his style of play and mindset as a mentor. The interview was widely distributed and lauded by rugby media. During O'Gara's time at the club, La Rochelle has been lauded for their astute game administration and effective defense.
In April 2021, O'Gara agreed to a three-year deal with La Rochelle, extending his affiliation with the French club until the 2023–24 season. O'Gara will oversaw the entire range of rugby operations in La Rochelle, as well as continuing his head coach duties following the news that director of rugby Jono Gibbes had joined rival club Clermont as their new head coach.
O'Gara was convicted of misconduct in November 2021 after failing to properly disclose his name on La Rochelle's teamsheet for their match against Toulon, which meant O'Gara was not allowed to be present pitchside during the game, resulting in a rift between O'Gara and the fourth official, which resulted in a tense clash, albeit courteous.
O'Gara coached La Rochelle to their first major silverware after losing to Toulouse in the 2020-2021 European Rugby Champions Cup final on Saturday, defeating Leinster 24–21.
In his match against an All Blacks XV on November 13, O'Gara will reunite with his former Crusaders boss Scott Robertson to mentor the Barbarians.
