Ron Wotus Career

Professional career

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 16th round of the 1979 Major League Baseball Draft.

He appeared with the Pirates in 1983 and has played for them in 1984. He batted 12-for-58 (.207) in 32 games in the majors. He spent time in the Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco Giants organization in 1988 and 1989, but never returned to the majors.

Coaching career

Wotus remained in the Giants organization from 1991 to 1997 as a minor league manager. He was a member of the San Jose Giants (1991–92), the Double-A Shreveport Captains (1993–95), and the Triple-A Phoenix Firebirds (1996–97). After leading San Jose to a 92-44 record, Wotus was named California League Manager of Year in 1991. Wotus was named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year in 1997 after the Firebirds won 41 of their final 51 games.

Wotus was the Giants' third base coach under new manager Dusty Baker in 1998 and served as bench coach under both Baker, Felipe Alou, and Bruce Bochy from 1999 to 2017. Wotus said he wanted to be able to oversee some day and interviewed for many major league manager jobs, including the Pirates (2005), Dodgers (2013), Rays (2014), and Nationals (2015). Wotus has also worked with the Giants' infielders and was in charge of defensive shifts. Wotus was promoted to third base coach, his first coaching position with the Giants, after the Giants had a disappointing 2017 season to help with the team's transition.

Wotus, along with John McGraw, became the second coach in franchise history on August 10, 2021, winning 2,000 games. Following the 2021 season, Wotus revealed on August 31 that he would be retiring from full-time coaching.
