Ronald Francis Perlman (born April 13, 1950) is an American actor and voice actor.

Vincent on the television series Beauty and the Beast (1987–1999), for which he received a Golden Globe Award, the comic book character Hellboy in both Hellboy (2004) and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and clay Morrow on the television series Sons of Anarchy (2008–2013). Perlman has also appeared as a collaborator of Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro, appearing in the del Toro films Cronos (1993), Blade II (2002), and Pacific Rim (2013).

He is also known for his voice-over work as the narrator of the DC Animated Universe's Fallout, Clayface, and the Stabbington brothers in Disney's animated film Tangled (2010), who is also known for his voice-over work.

Early life

Ronald Perlman was born in Washington Heights, New York City, on April 13, 1950. Dorothy (née Rosen) (1921–1969), his mother, Dorothy (née Rosen), was a municipal employee and his father, Bertram "Bert" Perlman (1919-1919-1969), was a jazz drummer and television repairman. Perlman's family is Jewish, origins from Hungary and Poland, and he attended a Bar Mitzvah service.

"It was not a bad childhood," Perlman said in 1988, "I had a sense of myself that was... As a youth, I was really skinny, and it was undoubtedly a poor self image. "This has drawn him to roles where he portrays "these sorts of deformed people who are extremely endearing," he said. After seeing him perform in a college production of Guys and Dolls, Perlman had a "very close" relationship with his father, who told his son he "had to" pursue a career as an actor. In 1967, he graduated from George Washington High School and Lehman College in 1971. He earned a master's degree in theater arts at the University of Minnesota in 1973.

Personal life

Perlman married Opal, a jewelry designer, on February 14, 1981. Perlman filed for divorce after separating in May 2019. Perlman married Allison Dunbar in Italy on June 28, 2022, after three years of dating. Under the stage name Delroy Edwards, his son performs electronic music.

In November 2016, Perlman referred to himself as a lifelong Democrat. He has been a vocal critic of former US President Donald Trump.

Perlman said he intentionally urinated on his hand before shaking Harvey Weinstein's hand and a note that "I think about that every time lil Donnie opens up his KFC." The tale drew attention and gave rise to the "Lil Donnie" internet meme style, a series of fake tweets in which Perlman would admit to bizarre and disgusting activities aimed at infuriating Trump.

Perlman declared on Facebook on November 9, 2016 that he would run for president in the 2020 race. In January 2019, he endorsed Kamala Harris' candidacy.

Career

Perlman began his career as a stage actor, appearing in various films, and made his debut in Jean-Jacques Annaud's film Quest for Fire (1981). When Annaud called Perlman to ask him about playing Salvatore in The Name of the Rose (1986), Perlman was contemplating ending his career. He rose to fame in film and television series as Vincent and the Beast's opposite Linda Hamilton from 1987 to 1990, after playing various minor and supporting roles in films and television series. In 1989, he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series.

He went on to appear in numerous films and television series throughout the 1980s and 1990s, as well as the 2000s. He appeared in films including The Name of the Rose (1986), The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993), The Adventures of Huck Finn (1995), The Last Supper (1993), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1995), Morgue II and Star Trek: Nemesis (both 2002) and two Stephen King adaptations, Sleepwalkers, and Desperation. Highlander: The Series, The Outer Limits, The Magnificent Seven, and the Amazon series Hand of God are among his television series on television.

In 1995, he appeared in Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro's French-language The City of Lost Children, his first leading film role. Perlman appeared in a Stella Artois beer commercial in 2003. At the 2003 British Advertising Awards, this commercial, "Devil's Island," received a Silver Award. When he appeared in the title role in the comic book version Hellboy in 2004, he played another leading role in the film. Perlman reprised his role as Hellboy in the straight to DVD animated film Hellboy: Sword of Storms (2006) and Hellboy: Blood and Iron (2007), as well as Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which was released on July 11, 2008.

Perlman appeared on Sons of Anarchy on FX in 2008, as Clay Morrow, the national president of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club. He appeared in StartUp's second and third seasons from 2017-18.

Perlman appeared in Steven Brand's noir thriller Joe Baby, starring Dichen Lachman, Willa Fitzgerald, and Harvey Keitel.
