Ronald Earl Glass (July 10, 1945 – November 25, 2016) was an American actor.
He was best known for his roles as a literary Det.
Ron Harris appeared in Barney Miller (1975–1982) and as the spiritual Shepherd Derrial Book in the science-fiction film Firefly (2002) and its sequel film Serenity (2005).
Early life
Glass was born in Evansville, Indiana, the son of Lethia and Crump Glass.
Glass received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Evansville, where he double majored in drama and literature after graduating from St. Francis Seminary in 1964. The university has been named with the Medal of Honor several years ago. Glass said in 2007 that he knew he wanted to act even though he was enrolled in college. He appeared in a play and went on to an acting career with a teacher's support.
Personal life and death
Glass never married and was a Soka Gakkai International member. On November 25, 2016, he died of respiratory arrest at the age of 71. He is laid to rest at the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.
Career
Glass made his stage debut at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before heading to Hollywood. His earliest television appearances include episodes of Sanford and Son in 1972, an episode of Maude in 1973, an episode of All in the Family, an episode of The Bob Newhart Show, and Good Times in 1974. He debuted Det in 1975 and was given the role of Det. Barney Miller, Ron Harris, was a member of Barney Miller, which operated until 1982.
Glass co-starred Demond Wilson on television in a revival of The Odd Couple that was released on television. In an episode of the revived Twilight Zone series, he appeared as a soul-collecting devil opposite Sherman Hemsley's mathematics professor. In 1992, he co-starred in the sitcom Rhythm and Blues, a sort of "black WKRP" starring Roger Kabler opposite him.
In 1996, Glass was cast as uptight history teacher Roland Felcher in NBC sitcom Mr. Rhodes opposite comedian Tom Rhodes. Russell, Ross Geller's divorce attorney, appeared in two episodes of NBC sitcom Friends in 1999.
Glass appeared in scores of television shows, including sitcoms such as Family Matters and the series Teen Angel, where he played God's cousin Rod. Glass was a character in the Nickelodeon film All Grown Up! In the video game Fable II, Rugrats and Garth play the protagonist Garth. Duncan appeared in the film Lakeview Terrace with Samuel L.
