Joseph Joseph "Joe" Anoa?i (born May 25, 1985) is an American professional wrestler, model, and former professional gridiron football player.

He is a member of the Anoa?i family and is currently signed to WWE as a member of the SmackDown brand under the ring name Roman Reigns. Anoa?i began his professional football career with brief off-season stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) in 2007.

He spent a full season with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2008 before being banned and released from football.

He then embarked on a career in professional wrestling and was signed by WWE in 2010, which brought them their developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW).

Roman Reigns made his main roster debut in November 2012 alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins as The Shield.

The trio competed together until June 2014, when Reigns joined singles competition. Reigns has been a world champion in WWE, winning the WWE Championship three times and the Universal Championship once.

He is also a one-time United States champion, a one-time Intercontinental Champion, a one-time WWE Tag Team champion (with Rollins), the 2015 Royal Rumble champion, and the 2014 Superstar of the Year.

In the 2013 case, he tied for most eliminations in a Survivor Series elimination match with four, setting a new record for the most eliminations in a Royal Rumble match with 12 in the 2014.

He became the twentieth Triple Crown Champion and the seventeenth Grand Slam Champion after winning the Intercontinental Championship. WWE has attempted to establish Reigns as their next "face of the company," although the company has been met with hostility.

Early life

Leati Joseph Anoa'i was born in Pensacola, Florida, on May 25, 1985. He is of Arb'sh, English, Italian, and Samoan descent. Both his father, Sika, and his brother Rosey (1970–2017) were professional wrestlers. He is a cousin of former professional wrestlers in Anoa (1966-1990), Rikishi, Umaga (1973–2009), Tonga Kid and first cousin were relocated to The Usos and The Rock (non-biological). Anoa's attended Pensacola Catholic High School and Escambia High School before transferring to a major in management at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Personal life

In early December 2014, Anoa's Galina Joelle Becker married Galina Joelle Becker. The couple began dating in early 2005 while attending the Georgia Institute of Technology. They live in Tampa, Florida. Joelle, the family's first child, was born in 2007 and appeared in a PSA in June 2014. In 2016, Anooai and Becker had twin boys, followed by a new set of twins in 2020.

Football career

Anoa'i played football at Pensacola Catholic High School for three years and one year at Escambia High School; by the Pensacola News Journal, he was named Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year. While at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he was a member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team, as well as Calvin Johnson, who later became a wide receiver in the National Football League. Anoa'i was a three-year starter in his sophomore year and was also one of the team captains as a senior. In 2006, he was selected to the first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and received All-ACC first-team awards, two recovered fumbles, and 4.5 sacks.

Anoa'i was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in May 2007 after going undrafted in the 2007 NFL draft. After his team's physical and was released later that month, he was diagnosed with leukemia. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed him in August 2007, but Anoa'i was released less than a week later, just less than a week before the 2007 NFL season begins. He was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League in 2008 (CFL). Anoa'i wore number 99 for one season with the Eskimos, appearing in five games, of which he started three. Anoa's most memorable game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in September, where he tied for the team lead with five tackles and had a forced fumble. Anoai was released by the Eskimos on November 10, and the team later decided to withdraw from professional football.

Professional wrestling career

In 2010, Anoa'i signed a WWE deal and was later assigned to their new territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). In a 15-man battle royal, which was won by Alex Riley, he made his televised debut on August 19, 2010. He used the ring name Roman Leakee. Leakee was a participant in a 30-man Grand Royal on January 16, 2011, but she was disqualified. Later in 2011, Leakee formed a tag team with Donny Marlow, and the pair unsuccessfully challenged Calvin Raines and Big E Langston for the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship on July 8.

Leakee pinned FCW Florida Heavyweight Champion Leo Kruger in a non-title match in January 2012. He defeated Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins in a triple threat match on February 5th to become the FCW's top ranked contender in the Florida Heavyweight Championship. He failed to win the championship after losing to Kruger the next week. Mike Dalton won the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship with Mike Dalton, and the titles were then handed over to CJ Parker and Jason Jordan shortly after.

Anoa'i, with the new ring name of Roman Reigns and a villain villain, made his debut on the NXT's October 31 episode by defeating CJ Parker, after WWE rebranded FCW to NXT in August 2012.

Roman Reigns made his main roster television debut on November 18, 2012 at the Survivor Series pay-per-view tournament alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, destroying Ryback, allowing him to keep the title while still establishing villains. Even though Punk's opponents, such as Ryback and WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No (Daniel Bryan and Kane), the three brothers proclaimed themselves The Shield and pledged to mobilize against "injustice," while simultaneously refusing to serve for Punk. TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs clash on December 16, which saw Reigns, Ambrose and Rollins defeat Team Hell No. and Ryback in their debut match. In January 2013, the Shield revived Punk, primarily attacking Ryback and The Rock. Punk and his boss, Paul Heyman, had been paying The Shield and Brad Maddox to work for them on the January 28 episode of Raw.

The Shield left Punk behind them after starting a feud with John Cena, Ryback, and Sheamus that culminated in a six-man tag tournament at Elimination Chamber on February 17 that The Shield defeated. The Shield made their WrestleMania debut in April, defeating Sheamus, Randy Orton, and Big Show at WrestleMania 29. The Shield attempted to assault The Undertaker on Raw, but they were foiled by Team Hell No. On the 22nd episode of Raw, which The Shield won, there was a six-man tag team match. The Shield's undefeated streak in televised six-man tag team matches ended with a disqualification loss in an elimination tag team match against Cena, Kane, and Bryan on May 13 in Raw.

Reigns and Rollins defeated Team Hell No. 2 in a tornado tag team match to win the WWE Tag Team Championship on May 19 at Extreme Rules. When Bryan submitted Rollins on June 14th episode of SmackDown, the Shield suffered their first decisive loss in televised six-man tag team matches at the hands of Team Hell No and Randy Orton. On June 16, Reigns and Rollins defeated Bryan and Orton at Payback to keep the WWE Tag Team Championship. On July 14 and The Prime Time Players (Darren Young and Titus O'Neil) at Night of Champions, another successful title defense was followed by two more successful title defenses against The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) at Money in the Bank.

The Shield took over as Chief Operating Officer Triple H and The Authority in August. They were able to launch a rivalry with Cody Rhodes and Goldust due to their involvement with The Authority. Reigns and Rollins lost in a non-title match at Battleground on October 6, Rhodes and Goldust. In a no disqualification match on October 14 of Raw, Reigns and Rollins lost the tag team titles to Rhodes and Goldust, prompting Big Show interference. Reigns and Rollins failed to regain the championship in a triple threat tag team match at Hell in a Cell on October 27, 2010. The Shield team teamed up with Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger to face Rey Mysterio, Cody Rhodes, and Goldust in a classic Survivor Series match; Reigns will win the match for his team. After Reigns mistakenly speared Ambrose, the Shield were defeated by CM Punk in a 3-on-1 handicap match at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 15, The Shield were defeated by CM Punk in a 3-on-1 handicap tournament. Reigns were ranked 15 at number 15 in the Royal Rumble match on January 26, 2014, smashing Braun Strowman in 2018's record. After being lastly eliminated by Batista, Reigns will be the runner-up in the tournament. The Shield defeated Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, and John Cena in a six-man tag team match, which the Shield lost by disqualification after the Wyatt family interfered and attacked Cena, Bryan, and Sheamus. The Shield's six-man tag team match pitting The Shield against The Wyatt Family was scheduled on February 24 at The Elimination Chamber, where The Shield lost after Ambrose called the game midway through.

In March, The Shield appeared to threaten Jerry Lawler but Kane was then attacked, effectively ending all three men from participating in the fight. This culminated in a match between The Shield and Kane, as well as The New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn and Road Dogg) at WrestleMania XXX on April 6, which The Shield won. The feud with Kane prompted The Shield to break ties with Triple H, who later developed Evolution to combat them. Evolution was then defeated by the Shield at both Extreme Rules on May 4 and Payback on June 1. Rollins changed to The Shield and allied himself with Triple H and The Authority on the Raw after Payback.

Following Rollins' betrayal, Reigns will briefly work with Ambrose before embarking on a singles run and being quickly promoted to world championship contention. Following the defeat of a battle royal Reigns, Reigns was dragged into a ladder match for the uncontested WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank on June 29; however, John Cena was the victor. Reigns was again challenged for the title at Battleground on July 20, this time in a dangerous four-way match involving Cena, Kane, and Randy Orton, which Cena defeated. Reigns and Orton formed a rivalry that culminated in a match at SummerSlam on August 17, which Reigns won.

On September 21, Reigns and Rollins had a joints match scheduled for Night of Champions, but Reigns had a legitimate jailed hernia that required surgery before the game. Rollins was declared the winner by forfeit as a result of Reigns' inability to participate. Reigns appeared on "Superstar of the Year" on December 8 on Raw's December 8 episode, receiving a Slammy Award. During Rollins' match against John Cena, Reigns interfered with Rollins' match against Rollins and Big Show, causing him to be arrested at TLC on December 14. This reignited a feud between Reigns and Big Show, in which Reigns defeated him multiple times by counting out and disqualification.

Reigns then advanced to the 2015 Royal Rumble match on January 25, where he defeated Rusev after lastly destroying Rusev, effectively giving him a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 31. Despite portraying a hero in Reigns' victory, the audience booed him heavily. Reigns suffered his first pinfall loss in singles competition on the main roster on February 2, after Rollins' interference. On February 22, Reigns then defended his WrestleMania title shot against Daniel Bryan at Fastlane. Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank, while Reigns' main event match against Brock Lesnar, which Reigns lost when Reigns was pinned by Rollins, turned it into a triple threat match.

Reigns revived his rivalry with Big Show in April, which culminated in a Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules, which Reigns won. Reigns failed to capture the world championship from Rollins on May 17 in a fatal four-way match that also involved Orton and Ambrose. Reigns played in his first Money in the Bank on June 14th, but he lost after Bray Wyatt interfered and assaulted him. Wyatt defeated Reigns after Luke Harper intervened and slammed Reigns on July 17. With the duo defeating Wyatt and Harper at SummerSlam on August 23, he would enlist Ambrose to fight the reformed Wyatt Family. Reigns and Ambrose teamed with Chris Jericho on Night of Champions on September 20, but Wyatt, Harper, and Strowman defeated them. Reigns and Wyatt's feud came to an end in a Cell pay-per-view game on October 25, where Reigns defeated Wyatt in a Cell match.

Reigns defeated Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, and Kevin Owens on a fatal four way to become the top contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on October 26. On November 4, however, champion Seth Rollins regained his knee and vacated the title the following day, bringing a tournament to crown a new champion. Reigns defeated Big Show in the first round, Cesaro in the quarterfinals, Alberto Del Rio in the semifinals, and Dean Ambrose in the finals at Survivor Series on November 22 for the first time. Sheamus cashed in his Money in the Bank and defeated Reigns right away, effectively ending Reigns' reign in just 5 minutes. Following TLC's overreaction by Sheamus, Reigns, Tables, Ladders, and Chairs, the game was unable to recover the honour from Sheamus in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match, which culminated in a riot of revenge.

Vince McMahon, a wrestler from Reigns, defeated Sheamus in a title rematch, under the condition that if Reigns lost, he would be forced to leave. The Reigns won after overcoming challenges from McMahon, Del Rio, and Rusev, regaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the process. In the 2016 Royal Rumble match, McMahon eventually compelled Reigns to defend his position. Reigns was defeated by Triple H, who also lost the match, effectively ending the series. On February 22, Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 32, where he defeated Triple H in the main event to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion for the third time. Reigns, who argued a feud with AJ Styles, defended the championship against him at Payback on May 1 and then at Extreme Rules in an Extreme Rules match on May 22. Seth Rollins, a returning wrestler, struck Reigns during the latter match.

Reigns lost to Rollins on June 19, his first clean loss on the main roster and his reign at 77 days. Anoagi was banned by WWE for 30 days for violating WWE's internal drug screening program, which was legalized. Reigns and Rusev fought until the match started on August 21, prompting the match to be declared a no contest. Reigns would defeat Rusev to win the United States Championship on September 25, retaining the trophy against Rusev in a Cell match at the titular event on October 30 to put an end to their feud. In a losing proposition to Team SmackDown, Reigns appeared in a losing effort to Team Raw on November 20, 2007, alongside Braun Strowman, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, and Seth Rollins. Reigns defeated Owens for the Universal Championship on December 18, but Reigns lost by disqualification after Chris Jericho defended Owens, preventing Reigns from winning the match and the title. On the January 9, 2017 episode of Raw, Reigns lost the United States Championship to Jericho, a handicap match that also involved Owens' resignation at 106 days.

Jericho was suspended above the ring in a shark cage after Braun Strowman interfered, resulting in a no disqualification match at the Royal Rumble on January 29 that culminated in no disqualification, with Owens at the Royal Rumble on January 29 where Reigns lost after Braun Strowman interfered. Reigns reached number 30 in the Royal Rumble match later in the season, with Bray Wyatt, Chris Jericho, and The Undertaker being last eliminated by Randy Orton. Reigns defeated Strowman on March 5, giving him his first pinfall loss on the main roster. The Undertaker had choked Reigns on Raw, Reigns, after they both joined forces to assault Strowman. On April 2, Reigns and Undertaker clashed at WrestleMania 33, which Reigns won in his third straight WrestleMania main event. The next night on Raw, Reigns opened the show to ten minutes of raucous and chants from the crowd, trying to discourage him from speaking before saying, "This is my yard now" and leaving the crowd. After Strowman kayfabe injured Reigns' shoulder, Reigns resumed his feud with Strowman, he resurfaced. On April 30, Reigns lost a match set up against the two teams at Payback. Since a Strowman correctly injured his elbow, the feud between the two teams was put on hold.

On June 4, the reigns defeated Bray Wyatt, Finn Bálor, Samoa Joe, and Seth Rollins, the reigns became the top contender for the Universal Championship. After compelled Bálor to call a submission hold, Joe would win the game. Reigns was beaten by a returning Strowman, who challenged Reigns to an ambulance match at Great Balls of Fire on June 19, which Reigns lost. In a Universal Championship match involving both Strowman and Joe, Reigns was pinned by Brock Lesnar on August 20. Reigns and John Cena developed a feud over the same period that culminated in a match at No Mercy on September 24, which Reigns won. Reigns' victory over Cena over the weekend as the biggest win in his career. In October, due to mutual problems with The Miztourage (Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel) and Cesaro and Sheamus (Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel), Reigns, Ambrose, and Rollins decided to rename The Shield in order to fight the aforementioned alliance. Reigns was scheduled to appear on TLC: Tables, Ambrose, and Chairs on October 22, but he was forced to leave the game due to a health issue. Kurt Angle was brought on to win the game, but The Shield continued to win the match.

Reigns returned to a six-man tag team match at Survivor Series on November 13 on Raw and challenged The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods), a tribute to Survivor Series's new day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods). The Shield emerged victorious over The New Day at the November 19 festival. Reigns won the Intercontinental Championship on Raw, becoming the twenty-eighth Triple Crown and seventeenth Grand Slam champion after Ambrose's victory in the Grand Slam. Following his title victory, Reigns would successfully defend the title against Elias, Jason Cesaro, and Samoa Joe before losing the championship to The Miz on January 22, 2018.

On January 28, the reigns competed in the 2018 Royal Rumble match, but Shinsuke Nakamura was the last participant eliminated, but not all participants were disqualified by eventual winner Shinsuke Nakamura. Reigns qualified for the Elimination Chamber match, which he won, gaining the right to face Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34. Reigns lost the championship from Lesnar at WrestleMania on April 8. On April 27, they had a rematch for the championship at the Greatest Royal Rumble, this time in a steel cage match, which Reigns barely won after spearing Lesnar through the cage wall.

Reigns then joined Samoa Joe at Backlash and Jinder Mahal at Money in the Bank on May 6, where both men believed they were the rightful challenger to Lesnar's championship. On July 15, Extreme Rules was played out, triggering a match that ended in a tie for Lashley. Lesnar's challenger for SummerSlam was scheduled to be determined by two triple threat matches on Raw the following night. Both Reigns and Lashley won their respective tournaments, setting up a top-one contender's match between the two teams next week, which Reigns won. Reigns defeated Lesnar and won the Universal Championship for the first time in his career at SummerSlam on August 19, 19 years ago. With Braun Strowman, the Money in the Bank holder, Reigns reignited his feud. In order to battle The Shield, the Strowman would also team up with Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre. On September 16, the reigns then met Strowman at Hell in a Cell match that resulted in a no contest after Brock Lesnar returned and assaulted both men. The Shield defeated Strowman, Ziggler, and McIntyre in a six-man tag team match before losing to them in a rematch on Raw two nights later on October 6 at Super Show-Down.

Reigns, Strowman, and Lesnar had been scheduled for the Universal Championships, but Reigns relinquished the title and declared his hiatus on Raw on October 22, revealing that his leukemia had returned after 11 years of private combat and being in remission. Following this news, Reigns will embark on an indefinite halt in order to get medical attention. Reigns was first diagnosed in May 2007 when he was signed to the Minnesota Vikings and went into remission two years after the initial diagnosis.

Reigns returned to Raw on February 25, 2019, a massive audience cheered him on as his leukemia remission once more. Reigns and Rollins will assist Ambrose after an attack by Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, Elias, and Baron Corbin later in the night. The following week, Raw, Ambrose and Reigns and Rollins were aided by the foursome in another attack before the trio's signature pose was reuniting the group for the third time. On March 10, the Shield defeated McIntyre, Lashley, and Corbin's Corbin team at Fastlane. Reigns accepted a challenge from McIntyre for a match at WrestleMania 35 on March 25, a show on Raw. Reigns was drafted to the SmackDown brand on the April 16 episode of SmackDown, with WWE's announcers referring to Reigns as "SmackDown's greatest ever purchase," as well as the future of SmackDown and WWE. On the 30th episode of SmackDown, an unidentified individual pushed lighting fixtures on Reigns. Reigns was struck by the assassination of a hit and run last week. Reigns next prosecuted Daniel Bryan and Erick Rowan after finding out Samoa Joe and Buddy Murphy as criminals after a YouTube video clip of seeming incriminating footage. Bryan, on the other hand, described the attacker as someone who resembled Rowan. However, Reigns discovered a new video showing Rowan arguing over the machine. Rowan admitted that it was him and that he was partially responsible for the assault and run. Rowan was forced to pull Bryan and Rowan apart due to Rowan's disqualification, and Rowan's Clash of Champions was held on September 15, which Rowan defeated after interference from a returning Luke Harper. Reigns would eventually defeat Rowan and Harper in a lumberjack match on the 20th anniversary of SmackDown and then team with Bryan to defeat Rowan and Harper at Hell in a Cell on October 6 in a tornado tag team match to bring an end to the feud. Reigns was a member of Team Hogan (alongside Rusev, Ricochet, Shorty G, and Ali), defeated Team Flair (Randy Orton, King Corbin, Bobby Lashley, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Drew McIntyre) at Crown Jewel on October 31, 2011.

Reigns and King Corbin's allies, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, ignited a feud in November. Reigns was named team captain for SmackDown at Survivor Series on November 24, where he and his four colleagues defeated Team Raw and Team NXT in a five-on-five tag team elimination match. Corbin ordered Mustafa Ali to be disqualified during the match. Reigns responded by spearing Corbin and ordering his removal. Following Ziggler and The Revival's interference, a tables, ladders, and chairs match was planned for the TLC pay-per-view on December 15, which Reigns lost after interference from Ziggler and The Revival (Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson). Reigns defeated Corbin in a falls count anywhere match after receiving assistance from The Usos at the Royal Rumble on January 26, 2020. He entered the Royal Rumble match later that night, but he was eliminated by eventual winner Drew McIntyre. Reigns defeated Corbin in a steel cage match on February 27, putting an end to their feud.

Reigns defeated Goldberg for the Universal Championship on SmackDown, resulting in a match between the two teams being called up for WrestleMania 36. Braun Strowman would replace Reigns at the function on April 3, despite Reigns' cancellation of the event due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and his immunocompromised from his leukemia. "I just had to make a choice for my family," Reigns continued to remain unplugged from WWE programming during the pandemic, according to Hindustan Times: "I just had to make a choice for my family." On August 23, reigns reigned at SummerSlam, attacking Bray Wyatt, the newest Universal Champion "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt, and Braun Strowman after their match for the title. Reigns reunited himself with his new boss, Paul Heyman, on the first Sunday of SmackDown, for the first time since 2014. Reigns defeated the Fiend and Strowman to win the Universal Championship for the second time at Payback on August 30.

Reigns and his cousin Jey Uso fought back then, sparking a feud. Reigns retained the title against Jey Uso by a technical knockout, after Reigns brutally defeated Jey, while Jimmy Uso threw in the towel in his first championship defense at Clash of Champions on September 27, Reigns retained the title against Jey Uso by technical attack. Jey was asked to follow Reigns' instructions and identify him as "the Tribal Chief" as a villainous figure due to his injuries.

Reigns defeated WWE Champion Drew McIntyre in a champion versus champion match on November 22, before starting a rival feud with Kevin Owens after Reigns suspected Owens of disrespecting his families. In a TLC match against Owens titled Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 20 and 2021 respectively, Reigns defended the title against Owens in a TLC match at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 20th and in a Last Man Standing match at the Royal Rumble on January 31, 2021, respectively. At both Elimination Chambers on February 21 and Fastlane on March 21, Reigns then retained his title against Daniel Bryan. Reigns will also feud with Edge, who had won the Royal Rumble match at the time. Reigns defeated Bryan and Edge in a triple threat match on April 11 in the main event of WrestleMania 37, retaining the Universal Championship after Jey's assistance. Reigns defeated Bryan in a championship versus career match on April 30 on SmackDown's SmackDown, resulting in Bryan being forced to leave SmackDown.

Cesaro, Reigns' next opponent in the championship, was defeated by Reigns at WrestleMania Backlash on May 16. Reigns and Rey Mysterio son Dominik were enraged by Reigns' brutality. On the 18th episode of SmackDown, the two teams faced off in a Cell match in a Hell in a Cell match, with Reigns emerging as the champion. Reigns was struck by the returning Edge on June 25 as he congratulated his victory over Mysterio, prompting a title match between the two teams at Money in the Bank on July 18, where Reigns retained with Seth Rollins. Reigns was confronted by a returning John Cena after the match. Cena challenged Reigns for a championship match at SummerSlam over the course of weeks, and after initially refusing Cena's challenge, a match was called official for the two teams at the tournament. Reigns defeated Cena to hold the title at the conclusion on August 21, defeating Cena. Brock Lesnar will confront Reigns right after the game. Reigns defeated Finn Bálor to keep the title at Extreme Rules on September 26, beating Reigns to retain the crown. Crown Jewel, Reigns, defended his position against Brock Lesnar adamantly, with the help of The Usos. Reigns would face WWE Champion Big E at Survivor Series on November 8, with Reigns emerging victorious at the contest on November 21.

Heyman was fired as his boss on the December 17 episode of SmackDown due to Heyman's previous participation with Lesnar. Reigns had intended to defend his crown against Lesnar at the Day 1 tournament on January 1, 2022, but the match was called off due to Reigns testing positive for COVID-19. Reigns won the longest running Universal Champion in the company's history on January 16, beating Lesnar's 533-day reign to become the nation's longest reigning champion. Reigns defended the championship against Seth "Freakin" Rollins on January 29, losing the match by disqualification; however, Reigns retained the title despite the fact that championships cannot be changed hands by disqualification. Later that night, he intervened in the WWE Championship match between Lesnar and Bobby Lashley, reuniting with Heyman to ensure Lashley's upset victory and the return of the trophy. Goldberg will return to face Reigns in a match at Elimination Chamber for the title on February 4 after their match at WrestleMania 36 was postponed due to Reigns' absence. Reigns retained the title after beating Goldberg by a technical challenge at the February 21 tournament. On the second night of WrestleMania 38, he defeated Brock Lesnar for his fourth time, becoming the first wrestler to simultaneously hold both the WWE Championship and WWE Universal Championship. Reigns successfully defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Riddle on June 17, but after the match, he was fought back by a returning Brock Lesnar to resurrect their rivalry and set up a Last Man Standing match at SummerSlam on July 30, which Reigns defeated ending their 7-year feud. Following entanglement from Drew McIntyre's debuting Solo Sikoa at Clash at the Castle on September 3, Reigns successfully maintained the titles against Drew McIntyre.
