Rodolfo Antonio Zelaya Garca (born July 3, 1988 in Usulután) is a Salvadoran professional footballer who competes for Los Angeles FC and the El Salvador national team. Zelaya was suspended from football for one year as a result of his involvement in a match-fixing fiasco.
Club career
Zelaya began his playing for San Rafael in 2004, where he played for one year. He migrated to Atlético La Merced in the following season.
Both Zelaya and Rsvel Saravia were given contracts in July 2006 to play for one of El Salvador's most important clubs, guila. Both Zelaya and Saravia were unable to cope with the club's new salaries, and as a result, the transfer went through.
Zelaya then went on to compete in Segunda División with Intipucá. Zelaya caught Chalatenango coach Vladan Vievi's attention after two years with the team.
Zelaya was invited and agreed to play with his first Primera División club, Chalatenango, after a meeting with Vievi. Zelaya continued to excel in his first season with the club and also established a fan base of both fans and journalists for being one of El Salvador's most promising young strikers.
Chalatenango came in fifth place in the league table with 25 points. At the end of the Clausura 2008 season, Zelaya scored 8 goals.
After former Chalatenango president Lisandro Pohl switched companies, Zelaya moved to Alianza in 2008. Pohl and others were taken to Alianza as a result of their rights being purchased while he was president of Chalatenango.
Zelaya was one of three Salvadoran footballers signed to León on a loan contract, the other two being Cristian Castillo and Julio Enrique Martez. Club León had formally signed Zelaya along with the other two Salvadorans on a three-year deal, as reported on December 3, 2009.
Zelaya will return to Alianza on a loan contract, according to Alianza's own president, Lisandro Pohl. Zelaya went back to school and attended the Clausura 2011 in which he was the top goalscorer with 13 goals to his part.
He also had the opportunity to win the title and score two goals at the final to help his team win the tournament.
Zelaya completed a loan transfer for six months with Russian First Division side Alania Vladikavkaz on July 19, 2011. Alania may be able to reclaim his transfer by January 2012.
Zelaya made his Russian league debut in a match against Torpedo Vladimir as a starter on August 9, 2011. On November 4, he scored two goals against Mordovia Saransk but also sustained a knee injury that would keep him out for seven months. Alania decided not to keep him and sent him back to Alianza in the summer of 2012.
He had signed a six-month loan to rejoin Alania Vladikavkaz, who had been promoted to the Russian Premier League, on January 26, 2013.
Since his deal came to an end, he was sent back to Alianza in June.
Zelaya signed Alianza in June 2014 and joined the company again.
Zelaya scored four goals in a 7-0 win over Chalatenango in the second leg of the Apertura 2018 quarterfinals, which took place in December 2018. Alianza reached the semi-finals.
Zelaya will join Major League Soccer team Los Angeles FC on January 30, 2019. The club and Zelaya had mutually agreed to parting ways in January 2020.
Zelaya was loaned to Las Vegas Lights FC, a USL Championship team.
International career
In a friendly match against China on April 23, 2008, Zelaya earned his first cap.
In a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Haiti, he scored his first goal with the national team on September 6, 2008. El Salvador defeated the then Caribbean Nations Cup champions 5–0 after he scored his first hat-trick, which resulted in their 5–0 victory over El Salvador.
Zelaya received two trophies for the best player in the matches against Cuba and Panama at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Zelaya's second top goalscorer of the tournament scored 4 goals in total.
Zelaya was named by Goal.com as one of the Best XI of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, with Javier Hernández as forwards. "Fito" was also rated as the tournament's fifth best goal, which was a respectable achievement considering that only 80 goals were scored in the tournament.
Rodolfo Zelaya was one of the most versatile and popular Central American players of 2012.
