Rodney McLeod Career

College career

McLeod played for Virginia in college. He finished his four years with 190 tackles, six interceptions, one dismissal, 17 pass deflections, and three forcible fumbles.

Professional career

The St. Louis Rams signed McLeod to a three-year, $1.44 million deal on April 30, 2012, after he went undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft.

McLeod, a freshman athlete from training camp, competed for a roster spot against Matt Daniels and Quinton Pointer. After Daniels missed the majority of camp due to a strain, he recovered quickly and earned the opportunity to display his athleticism. McLeod's quick rise to the top of the depth chart in the preseason after he led the Rams with 12 total tackles and earned reps ahead of Darian Stewart's solid security during practice. Jeff Fisher named McLeod, Quintin Mikell's back-up free safety, ahead of the regular season.

In the 27–23 loss, he made his professional regular season debut in the Detroit Lions' season-opener and recorded two solo tackles. After Logan returned a kick for 13 yards, McLeod's first tackle in life was on Lions' running back Stefan Logan. In the Rams' 24-24 match against the San Francisco 49ers on November 11, 2012, he tied for his season-high of two solo tackles. He made his only offensive pass on a fake punt for 21 yards during this game. With 13 combined tackles (nine solo) in 16 games and zero starts, he ended his rookie season in 2012. As a rookie, McLeod was also leading the Rams with 16 special teams tackles.

Since Quintin Mikell was released and Craig Dahl left in a free agency, McLeod went into training camp as a starting safety. He defeated Darian Stewart, Matt Daniels, and Matt Giordano. Since Darian Stewart missed the preseason and first three games due to a soft tissue injury, head coach Jeff Fisher called McLeod a good safety.

In their 27–24 victory, he made his first appearance in the St. Louis Rams' season-opener against the Arizona Cardinals and collected five combined tackles. During a 31–24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons this week, he recorded a season-high seven solo tackles. McLeod's total tackles, broke up a pass, and made his first interception of his career off a pass attempt by quarterback Jake Locker during the Rams' 28-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans on November 3, 2013. In the Rams' 27–16 loss to the New Orleans Saints on December 15, 2013, he made a season-high eight combined tackles. He played for 79 total tackles (63 solo), seven pass deflections, and two interceptions in 16 games and 16 starts in his first season as a starter. McLeod was a replacement for the injured T.J. McDonald and Darian Stewart, but he earned the starting job over Stewart in Week 12.

After Darian Stewart left for the Baltimore Ravens, new St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams named McLeod the starting free safety, as well as T. J. McDonald. In their 34-26 loss, he started the St. Louis Rams' season-opener against the Minnesota Vikings and finished with a season-high seven combined tackles. In the Rams' 19–17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McLeod made five solo tackles and intercepted a pass by quarterback Jameis Winston. He finished the 2014 season with 72 combined tackles (62 solo), six pass deflections, and two interceptions in 16 games and 16 starts.

After completing his three-year rookie contract, McLeod became a restricted free agent in the 2014 season. The St. Louis Rams made a second round tender offer on McLeod on March 6, 2015, which amounted to a one-year, $2.35 million deal.

Jeff Fisher, a head coach, kept McDonald and McLeod as the starting safety pair for the 2015 regular season. McLeod opened the St. Louis Rams' season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks, collecting six combined tackles in their 34–31 victory. On a 20-yard fumble return, he had his first professional touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in Week 7. In Week 11, McLeod had a season-high nine combined tackles, broke up a pass, sparked a fumble, and intercepted Joe Flacco's pass attempt in the Rams' 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. McLeod's 82 combined tackles (59 solo), five pass deflections, three forced fumbles, three intercepted fumbles, three touchdown kicks, three forced fumbles, and an intercept in 16 games and 16 starts in his last season with the St. Louis Rams. McLeod became a free agent with no restrictions after the 2015 season and became one of the top safety prospects on the free agent market. Multiple organizations, including the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens, expressed concern for him. McLeod's Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all extended him.

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to McLeod's five-year, $35 million deal, which includes a $17 million guarantee and a signing bonus of $8 million. The deal, which includes incentives, earns McLeod's fourth highest paid safety, and pays him a $7.4 million annual average wage, the fourth highest salary in all safeties. McLeod and Malcolm Jenkins were named as the NFL's highest compensated safety pair by the Philadelphia Eagles.

For the regular season, head coach Doug Pederson gave McLeod and Jenkins the starting safeties. In the 29-0 victory, quarterback Robert Griffin III led the Philadelphia Eagles' season-opener against the Cleveland Browns, scoring four combined tackles and intercepting a pass by quarterback Robert Griffin III. McLeod had a career-high 14 combined tackles (12 solo) in the Eagles' 27–20 loss at the Washington Redskins in Week 6. He played his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles, with a career-high 83 combined tackles (72 solo), seven pass deflections, three interceptions, a forced fumble, and a sack in 16 games and 16 starts.

Jim Schwartz, the offensive coordinator, kept McLeod and Jenkins as the starting safeties, while Patrick Robinson, Sidney Jones, and Rasul Douglas were among the others.

McLeod scored two combined tackles before leaving the Eagles' 27-20 loss at the Kansas City Chiefs in the second quarter after suffering from a hamstring injury in Week 2. He missed the following game against the New York Giants and ended his 66-game streak as a starter came to an end. He also appeared in every single game since his debut as a rookie in 2012, totaling 82 games. In a 33-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, McLeod had four combined tackles, deflected a pass, and intercepted an interception. In the Eagles' 37–9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on November 19, 2017, he made three combined tackles, broke up a pass, and intercepted a pass by Dak Prescott. For the first time in his career, McLeod had three games with an interception. In a 34–29 victory over the New York Giants on December 16, 2017, he had a season-high 12 combined tackles. McLeod was a healthy scratch in Week 17 and was held inactive to rest for the playoffs after suffering a quadriceps injury just a few weeks before. He had 54 combined tackles (39 solo), six pass deflections, three interceptions, and three interceptions, as well as a forced fumble in 14 games and 14 starts in the 2017 season. McLeod's overall rating was 79.3, ranking him 39th out of all safeties in 2017.

With a 13–3 record and a playoff berth and home field advantage, the Philadelphia Eagles finished the 2017 season undefeated in the NFC East. During the Eagles' 15–10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Divisional round on January 13, 2018, McLeod played his first playoff game and saw seven solo tackles and a sack on Matt Ryan. McLeod was placed on injured reserve on December 16, 2020.
