Rod Brasfield Career

Life and career

Brasfield was born in Smithville, Mississippi, United States. He began his career in the late 1920s with Bisbee's Dramatic Shows, a touring tent repertory troupe, and comedian Boob Brasfield. Eleanor Humphrey, a Hohenwald, Tennessee school teacher, married him in 1931.

In 1944, Brasfield was recruited by George D. Hay for the Grand Ole Opry. With his signature baggy suit, battered hat, and rubbery face, he could make people laugh before speaking a word. He soon became the primary comedian on The Prince Albert Show, the Opry's NBC Radio broadcast, quoting Red Foley, the show's host. He often mocked country life, but with humour, assuming the role of a hapless hayseed.

In 1948, he and Minnie Pearl formed "double act," in which each of them delivered alternating punch lines and neither of them played the straight man. Any of these routines were shown on the Opry's live ABC television network show from 1955-56. He lived in Hohenwald and often referred to the local restaurant (which he once owned), the Snip-and-Bite. With a dummy named Bocephus, Hank Williams Sr. narrated his then-infant son Hank Williams Jr.; also did comedy with June Carter.

Brasfield appeared with Elvis Presley at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta in March 1956. He appeared in Country Music Holiday (1958), as Andy Griffith's ex-con sidekick. In 1958 in Martin, Tennessee, heart disease, as well as an ongoing problem with alcohol use, resulted in his death. He is buried in Smithville.
