Born 7 January 1988, Michael Sheehan (Irish: Roibe-Chris Mcheál) Siodhachachán (born 7 January 1988) is an Irish actor.

He is best known for television roles, including Nathan Young in Misfits, Darren in Love/Hate, and Klaus Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy, as well as film roles such as Tom Natsworthy in Mortal Engines and Simon Lewis in City of Bones. Sheehan has received numerous accolades including the Irish Film and Television Award and the BAFTA Award.

Early life

Sheehan was born in Portlaois, County Laois. He is the youngest of three children born to Maria and Joe Sheehan, who was a garda.

He joked that he was like "Footloose with spoons" at school, and that spoons were also used.

Sheehan attended St Paul's Academy in Portlaoise. He studied film and television at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, and was uncertain if acting was a viable career choice. He skipped several months of the course to film Summer of the Flying Saucer, failed his first year examinations, and decided not to attempt the repeats.

Personal life

Sheehan lives in London. He has also lived in Los Angeles.

When he was younger, he talked openly about trying his sexuality, but identifies as heterosexual.

He was in a feud with actress Sofia Boutella from March 2014 to October 2018.

Career

When Sheehan played Oliver in Oliver with a Twist, he became interested in acting in primary school. He auditioned for Song for a Raggy Boy and was granted the role after three months in Cork to film. He later joined the Laois Open Door theatre company and appeared as the crippled boy in a production of The Cripple of Inishmaan. Sheehan appeared on the Australian television show Foreign Exchange at the age of 16. He continued the tradition by appearing in The Clinic and The Tudors, and In Young Blades, he portrayed Louis XIV of France. He appeared in Rock Rivals and Bitter Sweet, a two-part television comedy drama. He also appeared in films, including Ghostwood, during this period.

Sheehan appeared in the Cherrybomb as one of the principal characters after graduating from the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. He appeared in the Channel 4 trilogy Red Riding's BJ in March 2009. Sheehan described the role as "weight" and a "step up" from his previous work, and cites the role for resetting his career.

Nathan Young, a young criminal, appeared in the first two seasons of the British television series Misfits from 2009 to 2010. Sheehan would not be returning to the show for the third season in April 2011. Sheehan, who later described "defining" and "a beautiful, stunning memory for me," and said leaving it behind was "challenging." In May 2011, he was nominated for a BAFTA Award in the "Male Support Actor" category for his role in Misfits. He played Darren, a member of gangland Dublin in Love/Hate, beginning in 2010. He accepted the position because he wanted to work with Stuart Carolan and Dave Caffaff, and appeared in three seasons. After leaving the series, his character's ubiquitous blue hoodie was donated to the Dunamaise Theater in Portlaoise, where he said it was "tough to watch [the] show go on without [me]. In 2011, and 2013, he was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award for his part in 2011. Sheehan appeared in Season of the Witch alongside Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman.

In the Rising Star category, Sheehan was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award. He appeared in Killing Bono and in John Crowley's production of The Playboy of the Western World at the Old Vic Theatre in the following year. Sheehan appeared in the second season of the BBC crime drama series Accused, which aired in 2012. Simon Lewis appeared in the 2013 film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and later in Anita B., The Road Within, Moonwalkers, and The Messenger in 2014 and 2015. In late 2015, Richard III appeared in Trevor Nunn's revival of The Wars of the Roses, an extension of William Shakespeare's Richard III and Henry VI's three-part Henry VI. Sheehan referred to the role as his new favorite in a 2018 interview with Hot Press, citing the "magic" and "transcendent experience" of being on stage.

In 2017, the Song of Sway Lake premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and the following year was released theatrically. It was shot before 2014, and Sheehan referred to his role as "immensely proud" in 2019. He appeared in Geostorm and appeared in Fortitude's second season, for which he was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award. In 2018, he appeared in Genius: Picasso as Carlos Casagemas and as a caricatured version of himself. He appeared in many films; he appeared in Bad Samaritan's David Tennant; and starred in Mortal Engines in the leading role of Tom Natsworthy;

Klaus Hargreeves appeared in the Netflix Original series The Umbrella Academy in 2019.
