Early life and education
Leonard grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he graduated from Ridgewood High School. He attended Fordham University and later the Columbia University School of General Studies. At HB Studios, he studied theater.
Personal life
Leonard has a close friendship with House co-star Hugh Laurie. Since childhood, Ethan Hawke, his costar in Dead Poets Society and Tape, has been mates. Hawke and Leonard, as well as James Waterston, Steve Zahn, and Frank Whaley, founded the Malaparte theater company.
Career
Leonard modified his name for his Screen Actors Guild membership by using "Sean," the name of his brother's nickname, as a middle name, because he revealed his birth name with another actor.
Leonard is a three-time Tony Award nominee who received Best Featured Actor in a 2001 play for his role as A. E. Housman in Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love. In 1995, he appeared as Valentine in the first of Stoppard's Arcadia at Lincoln Center in New York. In 2003, he was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Edmund Tyrone in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night; the film co-starred Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brian Dennehy, and Vanessa Redgrave. Leonard has appeared in Broadway musical productions since, in 2001, replacing Craig Bierko as the lead performer in a revival of The Music Man. In the 2011 Broadway revival of Born Yesterday, Leonard co-starred Paul Verrall as Paul Verrall.
Leonard's role in Christopher Reeve's television film In the Gloaming received rave reviews in 1997. Leonard "does a first-rate job of juggling Danny's combination of terror, hunger, and mordant jokiness," Entertainment Weekly said.
