Career
When Chuck Feeney, Miller and others first introduced DFS on November 7, 1960, the concept of "duty-free shopping" – providing top-end discounts to visitors, free of import duties – was in its infancy.
DFS began operations in Hong Kong, where the company's corporate headquarters is now located, and later expands to Europe and other continents. DFS' first big breakthrough came in the early 1960s, when it won the exclusive right for duty-free sales in Hawaii and Hong Kong, allowing it to sell its goods to Japanese visitors. DFS later developed to off-airport duty-free shops and large downtown Galleria stores, becoming the world's biggest travel store. Feeney's interest were purchased by Louis Vuitton Mot Hennessy (LVMH), the French luxury goods corporation, for $1.63 billion in 1996.
Miller retained his shares and remains a major minority shareholder (38%) in DFS alongside LVMH, which bought out Feeney's stake. Miller's interest in mainland China's economic elite has risen in recent years. DFS has expanded beyond the airport liquor store to store environments in order to showcase its latest brands in the traveling market. The DFS Group had estimated revenues of about €2.2 billion in 2010. As of 2012, there are 150 stores in 15 Pacific states. Its downtown operations are carried out under the Galleria brand.
Miller was named Monthly Person of the Month by The Moodie Report in honor of his contribution to the luxury goods industry.
