Early life
Kardashian was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 22, 1944, one of three children born to Arthur Kardashian (1917–2012) and Helen Jean Arakelian Kardashian (1917–2008), both Armenian Americans. Barbara Kardashian Freeman had a sister and a brother named Thomas "Tom" Kardashian. The Kardashians, who were born in Kars Oblast and identified by the surname Kardaschoff, a Russianized version of the Armenian surname Kardashian, lived in the area until now a part of modern-day Turkey, and they were then part of the Russian Empire. Arthur's father, Tatos, changed his name to Thomas and started a career in garbage collection, founding his own business, and marrying Hamas Shakarian, an Armenian immigrant.
He grew up in Los Angeles County's wealthy View Park neighborhood, where the family lived at 4908 Valley Ridge Avenue. Kardashian attended Susan Miller Dorsey High School and the University of Southern California, where he graduated in 1966 with a B.S. Bachelor's degree in corporate administration. He obtained his J.D. He obtained a degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and worked for about a decade; after that, he went into industry. Kardashian was one of the co-founders of Radio & Records in 1973, and the trade journal Radio & Records, which he and his colleagues sold for a large profit in 1979.
