Robert Asprin Life

Robert Lynn Asprin (June 28, 1946 – May 22, 2008) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer and avid follower best known for his comedic MythAdventures and Phule's Company series.

Early writing

The Cold Cash War, Asprin's first book, was an extension of a earlier short story of the same name.

He designed and edited the Thieves' World collection of shared world anthologies during the next two years, with his then-wife, Lynn Abbey, as the first project of its kind. Many of the writers wrote novels and stories about the subject that weren't included in the anthologies, beginning with Janet Morris, the first "authorized" Thieves World book, which was released in 1985. Janet Morris and Chris Morrison wrote two more than authorised Thieves' World books as well as a slew of related books about their character Tempus and the Sacred Band of Stepsons. During the mid-1980s, a series of graphic novels was published, and several other writers, including Andrew J. Offutt and David Drake, published books about their characters. Lynn Abbey revived the series with the book Sanctuary in 2002.

Asprin began the "MythAdventures" series in 1978, chronicling Skeeve and Aahz's amusing lives. The pundit books, which were originally published by Frank Kelly Freas and later by Phil Foglio, worry about a "demon" magician who has lost his abilities and his inexperienced human apprentice as they travel around a variety of countries. Later, Foglio and others' early "Myth" novels were turned into comic books. Over the years, three publishing houses have published The Myth books: Donning Starblaze, Meisha Merlin, and, in 2008, Wildside Press.

Asprin's "Phule" books in the 1990s challenged a rag-tag "Space Legion" and its wealthy and iconoclastic general, Willard Phule.

Robert Asprin Career

Hiatus in writing career

Asprin had little success during the 1990s due to a string of personal and financial challenges, but he did have two books on The New York Times Best Seller list, which piqued the attention of fans and the Internal Revenue Service. He eventually reached an agreement with the IRS that encouraged him to resume writing, and he wrote several books in the early 2000s, most in collaboration with authors Peter Heck, Jody Lynn Nye, and Linda Evans. These books included continuations of "Myth Adventures" and "Phule's Company," as well as work from a new series.
