Personal life
Estes attended Santa Monica High School and is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Josie Bissett, another cast member of Melrose Place, died on May 1, 1992. Estes and his wife divorced in 2005, with Estes reportedly fleeing out of their Seattle home at his wife's request. Mason Truman (born July 21, 1999) and Maya Rose (born April 14, 2002) have two children together. The couple announced their intention to divorce in January 2006.

Career
When training to be a stunt double, Estes first became interested in an acting career. Glenn Gallagher (1986–1987), one of his first acting appearances, appeared in the soap opera Days of Our Lives. He gained a following for his work as Sergeant Chris Lorenzo in Silk Stalkings (1991-1995), half of Mitzi Kapture's "dynamic pair."
Estes appeared on prime time Fox soap opera Melrose Place as Sam Towler in 1993. He returned three years later, but in a different role, restaurateur Kyle McBride. Estes appeared in 1996 to the series's cancellation in 1999.
Following Melrose Place, he had appeared on Providence, Suddenly Susan, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Gilmore Girls. He also appeared in theatre and appeared in Same Time, Next Year (2004), and The Lake (2005).
Estes appeared in the comedy film They Don't (previously titled Blended), which premiered on ABC Family in March 2005 and also starred Melrose Place co-star and then-wife Josie Bissett. In the ABC television crime drama The Evidence, Sean Cole made his return to series television playing Sean Cole.
