She and her parents and sister Raima Sen, both actors, spent time in Kolkata before heading to Mumbai. Bharat Dev Varma, her father, is a member of Tripura's royal family. Ila Devi, her paternal grandmother, was a princess of Cooch Behar, but her younger sister Gayatri Devi was the Maharani of Jaipur. Indira, her paternal great-grandmother, was Baroda's only daughter. Adinath Sen, Riya's maternal grandfather, was a popular Kolkata businessman, whose father, Dinanath Sen, was the Diwan or a Minister of Tripura's Maharaja. The sisters are listed on-screen under their mother's maiden name, but their official papers bear the surname Dev Varma.

Riya Sen Career

Acting career

Riya appeared in the film for the first time as a child artist when she was 5 years old in 1991, where she appeared in the film Vishkanya. At the age of 19, she appeared in National Film Awards winning director Bharathiraja's Tamil film, Taj Mahal (2000), which was written by Mani Ratnam but which did not have commercial success, although A. R. Rahman's music was not successful. She had intended to make her Bollywood film debut in Love You Hamesha, opposite actress Akshaye Khanna; but, the project was postponed, and she finally made her debut in N. Chandra's Style in 2001. This low-budget comedy was the first commercial success for the director in over a decade. The film, which stars Sharman Joshi, Sahil Khan, and Shilpi Mudgal, established a trend of commercial success for small budget films in India. In Xcuse Me, Sonali Joshi and Jaya Seal replaced Riya and the second female lead of the film.

Jhankaar Beats, a film based on legendary composer R D Burman's music, saw her appear in a small and glamorous role alongside Shayan Munshi, Juhi Chawla, Rahul Bose, Rinke Khanna, and Sanjay Suri. The film was produced by Pritish Nandy, the film's publishing director, and was produced on a budget of Rs. 25 million (US$525,000), the sixth in a series of small to medium budget films produced by Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC). Despite being part of a wave of offbeat films that mainly failed to make a mark at the box office, it attracted national attention upon its launch, which culminated in commercial success among a small audience in twenty cities. It was one of the first films made in Hinglish, a blend of Hindi and English.

Style and Jhankar Beats have been selling well. Harry Baweja's Qayamat and Subhash Ghai's Apna Money Money were both box office hits, and that lasted for 150 days. These films were the fourth consecutive hits in a row. Although many of her appearances have been focused on item numbers and cameos, she has played in few of her best roles in Low-budget films. Despite her small roles in Dil Vil Pyar Vyar (2002), Qayamat (2003), and Plan (2004), her attention was drawn to her item numbers in all three series, especially the one in Qayamat that featured her in a bubble-bath. In addition to this, she appeared in another item number on director-producer Ram Gopal Varma's behest in James (2005), who has a tradition of casting aspirant actress-models like Sameera Reddy, Isha Koppikar, and Koena Mitra in similar roles. In addition, she appeared in a dance number for Sajid Khan's Heyy Babyy (2007), which starred several mainstream Bollywood actresses.

Both of the films failed commercially, but she appeared in N. Maharajan's Arasatchi's Dance Number.

It Was Raining That Night, Sudeshna Roy's directorial debut of the Bengali film Hei Brishtir Raat, was released in English language by Shesh Manjrekar, and was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. She was supposed to star in Anjan Dutt's Bengali-English bilingual film The Bong Connection with her sister, but she was later dropped from the project and replaced by Peeya Rai Chaudhary. The two sisters were then cast together in director Ajai Sinha's 3 Bachelors, a Bengali film that debuted as The Bachelor in 2002 and was released in 2012.

Santhosh Sivan's Ananthabhadram, 2005, was her most profitable non-Hindi film. Both Riya and Sivan's first Malayalam ventures were both a failure and commercial triumph. It gained five Kerala State Film Awards and emerged as one of the year's biggest Malayalam successes. In the film, she played Bhama, a village girl lured by Digambaran and played the bad magician played by Manoj K. Jayan. The choreographer Aparna Sindoor made a strong use of Kathakali movements in a song-and-dance sequence demonstrating Digambaran's conversion of Bhama into a device for demonic rituals. The use of Kathakali in other major Indian films as well, including Shaji Karun's Vanaprastham (1999) and Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair (2005). Salman Rushdie's son claims that the author spoke "a few words."

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 14, 2022
Salman Rushdie (far left) has been able to talk and has maintained his 'usual feisty and defiant' sense of humor since being stabbed at a literary performance in New York, according to his son Zafar (second from left). Despite doctors' ability to pull him off a ventilator, Zafar Rushdie, 42, posted a heartfelt update on his father's illness, which is still 'critical.' On Friday, the Booker Prize-winning author, 75, was knifed up to 15 times before a literary talk at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York (top right). Hadi Matar, a 24 year-old suspect, has been charged with attempted murder and assault. He has signed a not guilty plea. Rushdie is being held at UPMC Hamot Surgery Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, and he's also pictured at the bottom right.
