Rishi Kapoor Career

Career

Kapoor's first on-screen appearance in his father Raj Kapoor's film Shree 420 (1955), where he will appear in the "Pyar Hua Hai" musical sequence at the age of three. In addition, Raj Kapoor would direct the film that starred Rishi in his debut role, Mera Naam Joker, in which the actor will play the lead role (played by Raj Kapoor).

In the 1973 film Bobby, Rishi Kapoor's first leading role would be in adulthood, opposite Dimple Kapadia. Bobby went on to become one of India's biggest hits, and Rishi Kapoor was given the Filmfare Best Actor Award. In a 2012 interview, he'd say, "There was a mistaking that the film was made to introduce me as an actor." Mera Naam Joker's debt was actually made to pay the movie. Dad wanted to make a teen love story but he didn't have enough funds to cast Rajesh Khanna in the film. Following Bobby (1973), he appeared in numerous light-hearted comedies in the 1980s, including Rafoo Chakkar (1977), with Amitabh Bachchan; and Khel Mein (1977) and Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) with Zeenat Aman.

Kapoor met Neetu Singh for the first time in Zahreela Insaan (1974). The two will continue to film in various projects, including Kabhi (1976) and Doosra Aadmi (1976), and then marry in 1980. Kapoor appeared alongside Tina Munim in director Subhash Ghai's reincarnation thriller Karz (1980), which went on to become a cult classic with popular music in 1980. Kapoor played an idealistic Devdhar in the 1982 film Prem Rog, which was based on the belief of widow remarriage and co-starring Padmini Kolhapure. Kapoor reunited with Dimple Kapadia in 1985, another highlight of his career, as the two teams made their debuts in Bobby. He appeared in a number of multi-starrer films in the 1980s, including Naseeb (1981), Kaatilon Ke Kaatil (1981), Coolie (1982), Dosti Dushmani (1988), and Gharana (1989). Kapoor will play a man forced by customs to marry his widowed sister-in-law, played by Hema Malini in the 1986 drama Ek Chadar Maili Si, which was based on Rajendra Singh Bedi's book of the same name.

Kapoor appeared in Henna, a tale of passion across national boundaries that was envisioned by his father, Raj Kapoor, and directed by his elder brother Randhir Kapoor in 1991. Henna was India's nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Kapoor appeared in the 1993 film Damini, co-starring Meenakshi Seshadri and Sunny Deol, which went on to be considered a classic socially directed film. Kapoor's other film appearances during 1973 and 2000 include: Raaja (1975), Laila Majnu (1976), Bade Dil Wala (1983), Chandni (1992), Deewana (1992), and Karobaar (2000). Kapoor appeared in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), which starred Rajesh Khanna, Akshaye Khanna, and Aishwarya Rai. This was his sole directorial venture.

Kapoor successfully transitioned to character acting in the mid-2000s, going on to appear in numerous supporting roles, including Hum Tum (2004), Fanaa (2006), Namastey London (2007), and Love Aaj Kal (2009). He appeared in the British English-language films Don't Stop Dreaming and Sambar Salsa in 2007. In the 2010s, he appeared as the villain in Agneepath (2012), Aurangzeb (2013), and Kaanchi (2014); in Student of the Year (2012) as a gay character; and as real-life mobster Dawood Ibrahim. He appeared with his brother Randhir for the first time in the multi-starrer comedy Housefull 2 (2012). He received the Filmfare Critics Award for his role in Do Dooni Chaar (2010), playing a middle-aged father trying to buy his own car. He also received a Filmfare Best Support Actor Award for his work in Kapoor & Sons (2016). He and his partner Neetu Kapoor and son Ranbir Kapoor appeared in an action comedy film Besharam (2013).

He had his on-screen reunion with actor Amitabh Bachchan in 102 Not Out (2018), in which the two actors portray an old father-son pair. He appeared in the Netflix drama Rajma Chawal in 2018 and was praised for his portrayal of a Muslim in Mulk. Two films of Kapoor's were released in 2019: Jhootha Kahin Kahin Kahin Kahn, a comedy-drama film directed by Smeep Kang; and The Body, a mystery-thriller written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. The Body, which will be Kapoor's last film to be released in his lifetime, will be released on December 13, 2019.

Hitesh Bhatia's Sharmaji Chawla, co-starring Juhi Chawla, was under development at the time of Kapoor's death on April 30, 2020, and a four-day schedule was pending at the time. The film will be seen in theaters, according to producer Honey Trehan on May 8.
