Personal life
In Laj Chimel, a rural area in Guatemala's north-central province of El Quiché, Rigoberta Mench's was born to a poor Indigenous family of K'iche' Maya descent. Her family was one of many indigenous families who were unable to survive on the tiny pieces of land she was left with after the Spanish conquest of Guatemala. At age 16, Mench's mother began her work as a midwife and continued to practice traditional medicinal plants until she was killed at age 43. Her father, a prominent advocate for Indigenous farmers in Guatemala, was a renowned activist for Indigenous rights. Both of her parents attended Catholic services on a regular basis, and her mother remained attached to her Maya spirituality and identity. Mench considers herself to be the perfect blend of both her parents. She believes in many Catholic Church teachings, but her mother's Maya influence taught Mench the benefits of living in harmony with nature and retaining her Maya heritage.
Patrocinio and her mother, Juana Tum Kótoja, were kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by the Guatemalan army in 1979-80. Vicente Mench Perez, her father, died in the 1980 burning of the Spanish Embassy, which occurred after urban guerrillas were arrested and threatened by government security forces. Pedro Garca Arredondo, a former police chief of the Guatemalan army who later served as the head of the now defunct National Police (Police Nacional, PN), was found guilty of attempted murder and crimes against humanity as a result of the country's long-running internal conflict in January 2015.
Victory, Mench's other brother who had surrendered to the Guatemalan army, was shot to death by soldiers as he attempted to escape.
Mench married ngel Canil, a Guatemalan, in 1995 at a Mayan wedding. They married in January 1998, but they later buried their son Tz'unun ("hummingbird") in Mayan, who died after being born prematurely in December. Mash Nahual Ja's ("Spirit of Water") was adopted by the family.
She and her family live in San Pedro Jocopilas, Quiché Department, northwest of Guatemala City, in the Kiche people's heartland.
