Richie Hawtin Career

Career

Hawtin was one of the pioneers of the Minimal techno revolution in the early 1990s, where he embodied a "second wave" of American producers, including Daniel Bell, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, and Mike Banks, who are credited with Detroit techno. Concept 1, Robert Hood's work and other designers' designs, was released in 1996. His M-nus brand also went in this direction. The Decks, EFX & 909 mix album, the first in a series of three, featured 38 songs made by effects and drum machines.

Hawtin appeared at the Life Fest in Windsor in 2001. He lived in New York City for part of 2002 and 2003 before launching a label in Berlin, Germany, where he concentrated on his M-nus brand, and expanding the careers of DJ-producers such as Magda, Gaiser, Hearttrob, and Troy Pierce.

In 2006, he collaborated with choreographer Enzo Cosimi on a piece called "9.20" for the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. "Enzo and I are really keen on pushing boundaries both as artists and for our audiences," he said. The Winter Games' opening Ceremonies bring together a huge audience but also introduces them to sights and sounds they may not have never experienced before.

On a tour of North American universities in 2012, Hawtin studied Electronic Dance Music, taught music production, electronics industry, and live music performances.

The University of Huddersfield awarded Hawtin an Honorary Doctorate of Music Technology in July 2015.

For the XXth Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony and the 1928 silent French film Brumes d'automne, Hawtin composed and scored music.

Hawtin has appeared under the names Plastikman, F.E., Concept 1, Circuit Breaker, Robotman, Chrome, Spark, R.H., Richard Michaels, and Up! Hawtin and Pete Namlook collaborated on the From Within collection of albums, which blend minimal techno and ambient. He and Sven Väth appeared on Sounds of the Third Season, a compilation CD. In 2007, Slices magazine published "Pioneers of Electronic Music," their first issue was a 60-minute biographical documentary about Hawtin. The film follows his journey from his childhood crossing the border to Detroit to his new life in Berlin, and it includes interviews with numerous coworkers and families.

The publication of Arkives 1993-2010, a massive box set containing everything Hawtin has sold under his Plastikman moniker, as well as a new mixed set and previously unveiled material, was among the 2011 offerings. The range includes CDs, vinyl, digital downloads, and a DVD.

At the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City in November 2013, Hawtin performed as Plastikman. This performance was included in the EX album, which was released digitally on June 10, 2014, followed by a CD release on July 15, 2014.

Hawtin unveiled a fifteen-track compilation titled From My Mind To Yours on December 11, 2015, to celebrate his record label Plus 8. The album features all new tracks from his various aliases, including Plastikman, F.U.E., Robotman, R.H.X., and Circuit Breaker. It debuted in the top 20 in the UK dance album charts in its first week.

Other Hawtin's collaborations include an installation at the Grand Palais in Paris with Anish Kapoor in 2011, Not Abstract II exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in New York with German artist Andreas Gursky in 2011, and an audiovisual installation at 180 The Strand in London under his F.U.E.
