Richard Madeley Career

Life and career

Madeley was born in Romford, Essex, on May 13th, the son of journalist Christopher Holt Madeley (died 1977), from a family of tenant farmers at Kiln Farm, Shawbury, Shropshire, and Mary Claire (née McEwan). His mother was from Canada. He attended the Coopers' Company School in Bow and is now relocated to Upminster, Greater London. When he was around 14, he transferred to Shenfield High School in Brentwood. Madeley said in 2020 that she and her father were physically violent, "grabbing his stick, and laying about [him] for four to five strokes with no provocation; this stopped when his mother, who was out of work and unaware of her husband's violent discipline, told him that if it happened again, she'd call the police; after this, she gave a complete and frank apology; never struck me again." Madeley was "surprised by the level of media interest it generated because, to me, it was unprecedented not to be struck back then," and he almost regretted writing about it, noting that beatings are the defining feature of his father's life, and he described his father as "fun, brilliant, warm, and tactile." Christopher Madeley was also subjected to physical abuse by his own father, Geoffrey.

Madeley began his career in local newspapers before moving to BBC Radio Carlisle at the age of 19 as a news producer and host. He soon joined Border Television as a reporter on the local news television network before fronting its own Calendar with Richard Whiteley on Yorkshire television and then onto Granada Reports in the early 1980s. Madeley appeared on ITV's weekly rugby league show RL Action until 1984, which increased his fame in the North of England. Judy Finnigan, who had been scheduled to assist him on his first day, was here with him.

From its inception in October 1988 to July 2001, Richard Madeley and his partner Judy Finnigan appeared on This Morning from its inception in October 1988 to July 2001. On ITV, a combination of celebrity interviews, household tips, cookery, and phone calls, the series lasted about two hours per weekday morning, broadcast from Liverpool's Albert Dock. In 1996, London was moved to London. Since the couple was so closely linked to the show, many people referred to the show as "Richard and Judy" rather than This Morning. This Morning and Richard and Judy hosted a telephone interview titled 'Have you ever slept with a pig?' "I know I certainly have," Madeley argued, to which she replied, "I know I certainly have."

Madeley has been on display as a visitor, publicizing his autobiography since being out of the show. In October 2009, the couple joined the show's subsequent hosts, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, to commemorate its 21st birthday.

Madeley returned to This Morning in October 2013 to celebrate 25 years of the show's live from the Albert Dock in Liverpool.

Madeley and Judy Finnigan would return to host This Morning for one episode in October 2019, during half-term, while Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford took over the regular Monday slot on Thursday.

The couple appeared on This Morning in 2001, having been contacted by Channel 4 to host Richard & Judy, a similar program that was on display in the early evenings. Jonathan Ross' brother Simon and his wife Amanda produced the program, which was based on Cactus TV.

Madeley and Finnigan apologised live on air following the discovery of a TV quiz phone scam in connection with the daily phone bill game You Say We Pay. Madeley and Finnigan also took the decision to suspend the daily quiz until further notice. The news media announced later this week that police probes would be launched, implying that the couple could be subjected to a police interview. According to Channel 4, the ruse may have been in place for two separate series of the show. Although Madeley and Finnigan had been urged to continue entering, the show's winners were confirmed in the first ten minutes. Both of the couples deny being complicit in the bribery.

The Richard & Judy Book Club and the Richard & Judy Wine Club, two of which are similar in style to those used by Oprah Winfrey, have also opened two successful "clubs" the Richard & Judy Book Club and the Richard & Judy Wine Club. The book club featured literature by young and unknown writers. At an awards dinner, one book was reviewed each week and the winner, named "Read of the Year," was announced. The show came to an end in August 2008 after seven years of operation.

On UKTV's latest channel, Watch, the couple migrated to a new primetime show. Their latest show included popular topics such as the "Book Club" and "Summer Read." Richard and Judy's New Position on Mondays began at 8 p.m. on October 7, 2008. With only 200,000 viewers for the first episode and 53,000 for the second, the show attracted very poor viewing figures. Since television viewing figures had consistently decreased, falling to new lows of just 11,000 viewers, Channel 4's new offering would have figures as high as 2.5 million. Consequently, on 8 May 2009, it was announced that the show would end in July, with the host's remark that viewers "simply couldn't find us."

Although focusing on their daytime display, the pair has been involved in other ventures. Madeley and Finnigan gained on the season finale of the classic board game Cluedo before Madeley launched the game show Connections, quiz show Connections, the daytime quiz Runway, and a series on the world's worst weather, Eye of the Storm. He hosted the ITV1 show Fortune: Million Pound Giveaway and was the host of the unaired pilot of You've Been Framed.

Madeley hosted the news show Have I Got News for You on December 14, 2007, and later appeared as a guest panelist in May 2011. On BBC Radio 5 Live, he sat in for Richard Bacon. Madeley also covered for Dawn Patrol presenter Sarah Kennedy for two weeks from 27-30 April 2009, and for various occasions on BBC Radio 2. He appeared on Piers Morgan's Life Stories in April 2009 and appeared on BBC Question Time in January 2010. Madeley appeared in the eighth season of Who Do You Think You Are? tracing his mother's roots to Canada and the United States. On Countdown for five shows in April 2013, he appeared as a Dictionary Corner guest.

Madeley hosted his own show on Radio 2, Madeley (previously Made on Sunday), covering Terry Wogan's Weekend Wogan over Wogan's holidays. After Wogan died in January 2016, Madeley's display became a semi-permanent substitute. Madeley and Michael Ball played together for about ten weeks a year, with Madeley presenting for about ten weeks a year and Ball taking the remainder.

Richard and Judy: The Autobiography, a couple's autobiography, was co-written by the couple in 2002 and published by Hodder & Stoughton. Madeley wrote the book Fathers and Sons, which traces his family history; it was published by Simon & Schuster in 2008. Madeley is the author of three books: Some Day I'll Discover You (2013), The Way You Look Tonight (2014), and The Night Book (2016).

When they were surprised by Michael Aspel live on air while broadcasting This Morning, Madeley and Finnigan were the subject of This Is Your Life in 1997.

Madeley has been a relief presenter on ITV's breakfast show Good Morning Britain since August 2017. Viewers have likened him to Alan Partridge, the fictional talk show and radio host, for his apparent resemblances to Steve Coogan's bumbling, tone-deaf comedy characterization. Madeley has commented that this comparison is "a bit unfair."

Madeley was chosen as their agony uncle to replace Graham Norton, who had been waiting since the previous month. After being chastised for the direction he gave a reader who felt their neighbor might be facing domestic abuse, he apologized in June 2020. "If they were going to kill each other, they should have done it by now." He had written "appalling and risky advice" at Refugee House, according to the charity Refuge.

Madeley was covered by Steph McGovern on Channel 4's Packed Lunch in January 2021, though she had to self-isolate due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Madeley was announced as a contestant on the twenty-first series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! After being admitted to the hospital due to an unidentified illness, he was compelled to leave the show and broke the show's COVID bubble. "I became sick in the wee hours of the morning and was admitted to the hospital as a precaution," Madeley said.

World's longest-serving lifeguard, 74, reveals how he met the love of his life on the job

Chris Lewis, a Bournemouth (left), began his RNLI lifeguard service at the age of 16. Little did he know that 58 years later, he would be honoured with a Guinness World Record for his efforts. The 74-year-old's husband Elaine, a volunteer lifeguard on the job, was also on the job, and it was love at first sight. 'I spent three years at the Birmingham teaching college and came back to the local swimming pool and came out of the changing room, and Elaine was at the far end.'
