Richard Farina Life

Richard George Faria (March 8, 1937 – April 30, 1966) was an American folk musician, writer, and novelist.

Early years and education

Faria was born in Brooklyn, New York, United States, the son of an Irish mother, Theresa Crozier, and a Cuban father of Galician origins named Richard Faria. He grew up in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood and attended Brooklyn Technical High School. He received an academic award at Cornell University, beginning as an engineering major and then transitioning to English. While at Cornell, he wrote short stories for local literary magazines and national periodicals, including Transatlantic Review and Mademoiselle. When at Cornell, Faria made good friends with Thomas Pynchon, David Shetzline, and Peter Yarrow. He was banned from attending a student protest against campus rules, and although he later resumed his status as a student, he dropped out in 1959, just before graduation.
