Career
O'Connor, 16, began playing guitar and started to write his own songs using Apple's Logic app. He began playing drumming and was one of four percussionists in his year at the BRIT School; his primary instrument provided him with a broad exposure to a variety of projects in his academy, which he cites to his exposure to new music.
On September 4, O'Connor self-released his debut album, Bcos U Will Never B Free on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. After listening to the album, fellow English musician and producer Two Inch Punch got in touch with him, assigning him with a project manager. The two have continued to work together throughout O'Connor's career, including the tracks "UNO," "Best Friend," and "Untitled." Tyler, the Creator, also loved the album, and sent him an email expressing his admiration for the venture. He flew O'Connor out of Los Angeles the next year to collaborate on his album Flower Boy, with him co-writing and contributing vocals to the songs "Boredom" and "Foreword." "The bouncing keyboard riff underpins a hypnotic half-spoken vocal, one that shifts from topic to topic in a hazy burst of creative mania," O'Connor wrote. He released the single "Best Friend" on January 25th (premiering on Apple Music's Beats 1 station), followed by his second album Apricot Princess later this year. In 2017, Aimee Cliff of The Fader was compared to "other teen artists and post-genre teen artists, such as Kevin Abstract or Steve Lacy."
Following the success of Apricot Princess and Flower Boy, O'Connor's first release was released on October 11, 2017 with the single "Life Is Easy," created in collaboration with Dutch artist Benny Sings. In his television debut on Jimmy Fallon's "Independence Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," he performed the song on April 16, 2018. In collaboration with Randy Newman, the artist of the song, he released a cover of "You've Got a Friend in Me" on May 31. He was also included in Spotify's Rise Program.
O'Connor had intended to appear on French television show Quotidien on October 9, 2018, but he declined to appear because it featured a sketch by comedian Alison Wheeler parodying the Ku Klux Klan, which he described as "tasteless."
The single "New House" was released by O'Connor on February 14, 2019. "10/10" was released later this year, Pony's lead single. Pony's first major-label album on RCA Records was released on October 25, 2019. Based on 11 expert evaluations, Metacritic, a review company, gave the album a score of 76/100.
O'Connor unveiled an EP with recordings from his appearance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on September 30, 2020, as part of a YouTube documentary. This documentary chronicled the events leading up to this appearance as well as the Pony tour's early departure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In October 2020, O'Connor revealed that he was working on his fourth studio album, titled Who Cares? In January 2021, he liked a tweet hinting at a later date this year. However, this did not happen. He began officially teasing the album on January 13, 2022, by sending out postcards with a phone number that would be called and that if called, a snippet of the song will be played. The album debuted on March 11, 2022, and it was his first to top the UK Albums Chart, ahead of Impera by Ghost.
O'Connor canceled tour dates in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in July 2022 due to "unexpected personal circumstances."
