Reto Ziegler Career

Club career

Ziegler's deal with Tottenham Hotspur, which had been set to begin in January 2005, was supposed to begin in the summer of 2004. However, the two clubs did not agree to an immediate transfer, and Ziegler joined Spurs in late August of this year, allegedly through then-Tottenham sporting director Frank Arnesen's initiative.

Despite being just 18 years old, Ziegler made his debut and became a key player of the team under new head coach Jacques Santini, who resigned in October after just a few months as head coach, and his replacement, Martin Jol. Ziegler appeared in most left midfield, but he also appeared in a few games as left full-back, often switching positions with Timothée Atouba, another versatile left-sided player with the team at the time.

Ziegler appeared in 31 games throughout the season, including 23 in the Premier League. He demonstrated a lot of promise and growth, and became known with the fans for his left-minded play and solid passing skills. In the home loss to Arsenal, one of his most memorable moments of the season, he recalled one of his most memorable moments from his youth. He made it 4–5 at the end of the game, with a delicate chipped pass to Frédéric Kanouté. In the 1st January 2005 match against Everton, where he scored his first goal en route to a 5–2 victory. It was his sole aim of his professional career at the time. He was named JSM Young Player of the Year by the JSM Young Player of the Year, an award given to a young Tottenham player by its junior fan club at the end of the season.

Ziegler was sent on loan to Hamburger SV, a German Bundesliga team, where he appeared in 11 league matches and three UEFA Cup matches, but was chastised by manager Thomas Doll for a lack of energy and seldom played more than 30 minutes per match. In January 2006, he was released from loan by Tottenham Hotspur, but he was then forced to be put back on loan, this time at Wigan Athletic, another Premier League club. He played for Wigan until the end of the 2005-06 season, making five starts and five substitution appearances in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup, but not particularly well. He also appeared as a replacement in the 2006 Football League Cup Final against Manchester United, a 4–0 loss.

Ziegler played in four games, including starts against Milton Keynes Dons and in the UEFA Cup against Slavia Prague, as well as a replacement appearance against Manchester United in the Premier League. He joined Sampdoria, an Italian Serie A club, on loan until the end of the season.

Ziegler played his first Serie A match for Sampdoria against Parma on February 18, 2007. He scored his first goal in his tenth Serie A appearance for the club against Messina on April 21, 2007. Spurs drafted young left back Gareth Bale in May, but Ziegler opted to sign for Sampdoria permanently on July 3rd 2007. During his first season, he was in and out of the starting lineup, and the bulk of his appearances were substitutions.

During the first half of the 2009–10 season, Ziegler was able to retain his position more often. He was the first-choice left back after a string of replacement appearances. He was linked to a move to Juventus during the winter transfer window. He denied the transfer rumors that he was intending to continue his run in the hopes of being selected for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup with Switzerland, having just secured his spot in the starting lineup.

Ziegler's deal came to an end on June 30, 2011, but Sampdoria wanted to save some money as his salary came to an end. However, he did not leave. Sampdoria's striker Giampaolo Pazzini was sold in favour of Antonio Cassino, who was released as a free agent. The team continued to fail and was eventually relegated to Serie B.

Ziegler joined Juventus on a free transfer on May 26, 2011 after having agreed to a four-year deal. On May 25, he underwent a medical.

Fenerbahçe announced on September 2nd that they were in talks with Juventus and Ziegler to loan him for the 2011–12 season. All parties had signed an agreement for his loan, and it was announced the next day. Ziegler scored the first goal in the derby match against Galatasaray, which Fenerbahçe defeated 21-01.

Ziegler was loaned to Moscow's Russian Premier League side Fenerbahçe following his spell with Fenerbahçe.

On January 31, 2013 - Ziegler returned on loan to Fenerbahçe until the 2012-2013 season.

Sassuolo reported on August 20 that it had acquired Ziegler on loan from Juventus for an undisclosed period and fee.

Ziegler moved to Sion, Switzerland, on February 2nd, 2015, where he has been on a six-month contract until the season's end. He will join Sion later this season and will continue to play for the team until the end of the 2016-17 season.

Ziegler was signed by MLS club FC Dallas on January 2, 2018. He was the club's primary starter at left center-back in the 2018 season. He scored four goals and was suspended from a team-high three times. Following the 2020 season, Ziegler's deal with Dallas came to an end.
