Reshad Monquez Jones (born February 25, 1988) is an American football strong safety for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL).

He was drafted by the Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

He played college football at the University of Georgia.

Early years

Reshad was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School where he earned AAAA All-State and Defensive Player of the Year honors from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Georgia Sports Writers Association as a senior. Jones was the no. 1 safety in the country according to PrepStar 100 and Rivals Top 100. Jones was also the Fox Sports Net South Countdown to Signing Day All-South First Team defensive back.

Personal life

Jones is first cousins with former NFL cornerback/return specialist Adam 'Pacman' Jones. Jones has a daughter with WAGS Miami star, Darnell Nicole. They separated in 2016.

College career

Jones, a three-year letterman and two-year starter at Georgia, was a three-year letterman and two-year starter. Reshad played in 39 games with 27 starts and a total of 206 tackles (129 solos), with 10 stops for losses. Jones batted away 13 passes and intercepted 11 others for 174 yards. Since statistics were kept in 1950, the standout safety led the team in interceptions in a series of seasons. Reshad was named second-team All-SEC and second-team All-SEC honors for his sophomore appearance and second-team All-SEC accolades while winning the team's Most Improved Defensive Back Award. Jones appeared in the feature as a junior and was selected as a second-team All-SEC pick and was named as a team's Most Improved Player Award for defense.

Professional career

Jones said on January 4, 2010, he'll forego his senior year at Georgia and enroll in the 2010 NFL Draft, as he was supposed to be a second round pick by NFL draft experts. He was one of 54 collegiate defensive backs to attend the NFL Scout Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, and completed all of the combine drills. He finished third among all defensive backs in the bench press, tied for fifth in the vertical jump, and 21st in the 40-yard dash. He attended Georgia's pro day and improved his times in the 40-yard dash (4.50s) and 20-yard dash (2.64 seconds) and ran positional drills for scouts and team representatives on March 16, 2010. During a two-day visit, he was connected to the Miami Dolphins after attending a dinner with team members. Jones was expected to be a third or fourth round pick by NFL draft analysts and scouts at the end of the pre-draft process. NFLDraftScout.com rated him as the third best draft safety prospect in the draft.

In the fifth round (163rd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected Jones. The Miami Dolphins made their sixth (174th overall) and seventh round (219th overall) picks to the Washington Redskins for the Redskins' fifth round pick and select Jones. In 2010, he was the 13th safety pick out of the nation.

The Miami Dolphins signed Jones to a four-year, $1.95 million contract, plus a signing bonus worth $160,400.

Since being left vacant by Gibril Wilson's departure, he joined training camp against Tyrone Culver and Chris Clemons for the position of starting free safety. Jones was named as the backup free safety for Chris Clemons by head coach Tony Sparano in the regular season.

In the Miami Dolphins' season-opening 15–10 victory over the Buffalo Bills, he made his pro-season debut. After suffering a knee injury during the Dolphins' 23-22 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was inactive for two games in a row (Weeks 8-9). Jones made his first career appearance after losing by three tackles, two pass deflections, and his first career interception after being dismissed by quarterback Vince Young during a 29-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans on November 14, 2010. He made his first career start at free safety in place of Chris Clemons, who suffered a hamstring injury in the previous week. In the Dolphins' 16–0 loss to the Chicago Bears, he had a season-high five combined tackles. After suffering an ankle injury, he was sidelined for the Dolphins' Week 12 victory over the Oakland Raiders. He finished his rookie season with 21 total tackles (18 solo), two pass deflections, an interceptor, and a suspension in 13 games and two starts.

He attempted to serve as the starting free safety against Chris Clemons in 2011 during training camp. Jones, the offensive coordinator, along with solid defense Yeremiah Bell, have named Jones the starting free safety for the regular season.

During the 38-24 loss, he began the Miami Dolphins' season-opener against the New England Patriots and collected a season-high 12 total tackles (eight solo) and deflected a pass. As the Dolphins defeated the Houston Texans 23–13, Matt Schaub recorded six combined tackles and fired quarterback Matt Schaub the following week. Jones was inactive for the Dolphins' Week 7 loss to the Denver Broncos due to a knee injury he sustained the previous week. He returned the following week, but he was demoted as a back-up for Tyrone Culver. He remained the back-up for three games before returning to his starting position in Week 11. The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Tony Sparano after the Dolphins fell to a 4–9 record on December 12, 2011. Todd Bowles, the defensive backs coach, was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Jones intercepted his first pass of the season in Week 15, defeating the Buffalo Bills 30–23. He ended the 2011 season with 67 combined tackles (49 solo), four pass deflections, two sacks, and an interceptor in 15 games and 12 starts.

Jones was scheduled to begin training camp as a result of high safety. Joe Philbin, the head coach, and free safety Chris Clemons, were named the starter for the regular season.

During a 19–14 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Jones had a season-high 14 combined tackles (11 solo) and deflected a pass. During a 23–16 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 13, Jones had nine solo tackles, a pass deflection, a sack, and intercepted a pass by Tom Brady. He played in 94 games and 16 starts in 2012, including 94 combined tackles (73 solo), nine pass deflections, four interceptions, and a sack. He was also the Dolphins' interceptor.

Jones sat out and fortuaded organized team games due to a labor dispute, after allowing an average quarterback rating of 38.0 and only allowing one touchdown reception in pass coverage during his first full season as their starting free safety. In 2012, his quarterback's rating average for in pass coverage ranked fourth among all safeties. The Miami Dolphins agreed Jones to a four-year, $28.01 million deal, which also includes a $5 million signing bonus.

In their second season under defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle, Jones and Chris Clemons remain the starting safety duo. During a 26–23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Jones made three solo tackles, broke up a pass, and returned an interception by Joe Flacco for a 25-yard touchdown. It was his first appearance in his first four seasons. As the Dolphins defeated the New York Jets 217-21-19, he had a season-high 11 combined tackles (ten solo) in Week 17. Jones finished the 2013 season with 107 combined tackles (84 solo), four pass deflections, one interceptor, one interceptor, and one touchdown in 16 games and 16 starts.

Jones was suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season on August 8, 2014, for breaching the league's substance abuse policy. Jones made seven solo tackles, a season-high two pass deflection, and a return to Chicago to intercept Jay Cutler for a career-long 50 yards with his career-long 50-yard play during a 27-14 victory. In Week 13, he had a season-high 12 combined tackles (nine solo), deflected a pass, and intercepted a pass by quarterback Geno Smith, who led the Dolphins to a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets. Jones finished the season with 80 combined tackles (70 solo), seven pass deflections, three interceptions, and three interceptions, as well as a sack in 12 games and 12 starts.

He ended the season with a career-high 135 combined tackles (106 solo), ten pass deflections, a career-high five interceptions, two sacks, and two touchdowns in 16 games and 16 starts. After Cincinnati Bengals safety Reggie Nelson was unable to participate in the AFC Wildcard Game due to an ankle injury he sustained in the AFC Wildcard Game, Jones was named as a replacement to the 2016 Pro Bowl on January 24, 2016. Jones was named as the 64th top ranked player on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016.

The Miami Dolphins announced the signing of Adam Gase, the Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator, as their new head coach on January 9, 2016. Vance Joseph, the defensive coordinator, and free safety Isa Abdul-Quddus were among Jones' many benefits to begin the regular season.

During their 12-10 loss, he started the Miami Dolphins' season-opener with a season-high 12 total tackles (six solo) and broke up a pass. Jones intercepted a pass by Ben Roethlisberger in their 30-15 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 16, 2016, total tackles, a pass deflection, and intercepted a pass by Ben Roethlisberger. He left the game in the third quarter after breaking his rotator cuff. Jones was activated by the Miami Dolphins on October 19, 2016 and he would miss the remainder of the season with his torn rotator cuff.
