Remy Ma has one child from a previous marriage, as well as three stepchildren with Papoose. Reminisce Mackenzie, the couple's first child together, was born on December 14, 2018.
Life and career
Mackie was born in The Bronx and grew up in Castle Hill Projects. She was exposed to heroin use in her family from an early age. She was forced to care for her younger brothers and sisters at a young age, and she was forced to avoid her domestic life by writing poetry. Her name was spread around the Bronx, attracting Big Pun's attention. Pun took Ma under his wing and became her mentor after a meeting and freestyle session. On Big Pun's album "Remy Martin," she was featured on the tracks "Ms. Martin" and "You Was Wrong." Ma began her singing career under the name "Remy Martin" on Big Pun's album Yeeeh Baby.
Fat Joe, the rapper who died as a result of Big Pun's death, signed Ma to his imprint brand under SRC and Universal, where she became a member of his hip hop group Terror Squad. On July 27, 2004, she appeared on their second and final album, True Story. "Lean Back," the group's single, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks starting on August 21, 2004, earning Ma her first Grammy nomination.
Ma's debut album Something About Remy, based on a True Story, was released on February 7, 2006, and "Feels So Good" was promoted by the singles "Whuteva," "Conceited," and "Feels So Good." The album was a critical success, but it was also a financial challenge, with 37,000 units sold in its first week and 158,000 units within the first year. Remy was dissatisfied with Universal's marketing of the album, and the fact that tensions between her and the brand caused a rift between Ma and Fat Joe. Ma and Universal parted ways, and she denied her links with Joe and the Terror Squad.
Ma told Billboard that she was working on her second album, PunisHer, as well as a joint album as part of the all-female hip hop supergroup 3Sum, as well as female rappers Shawnna and Jacki-O on February 13, 2007. Remy was jailed in July 2007 for reportedly shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph at a Manhattan nightspot, effectively ending Ma's hip hop career as she served time for the offence. While detained, she published the mixtapes The BX Files, Shesus Khryst, and Blasremy.
Ma's music was featured and discussed in the Japanese documentary Black Lifestyle in 2011, where she was lauded for her style and listed as one of Japan's most popular listened to hip-hop artists.
In 2014, Ma was released from jail. She launched I'm Around on October 31, 2014. Remy on the Rocks, a collection of tracks from her mixtapes, was released on April 28, 2015.
Ma and her partner Papoose announced on July 7, 2015, they were joining Love & Hip Hop: New York for the sixth season. In seasons seven, eight, nine, and ten, as well as starring in the spin-off show Remy & Papoose: The Reboot, she has continued to appear on the show as a regular in seasons seven, eight, nine, and ten, as well as starring in the spin-off film Remy & Papoose.
Fat Joe and Maddy Mafi announced in 2016 that they would be releasing a joint album together. The joint album was announced as Plata O Plomo, which translates from Spanish to "money or bullets" on March 2, 2016. Pablo Escobar, a Colombian drug lord, who would give government officials and law enforcement the option of obtaining a bribe or having a murder contract placed against them, was used by them. "All the Way Up," the album's first single, was unveiled on the same day. "All the Way Up" was a critical and commercial success, earning platinum award recognition from the RIAA and two Grammy Award nominations. Plata O Plomo debuted on the Billboard 200 for the first week, with 11,158 album-equivalent units sold. Despite the album's lukewarm commercial success, music critics generally lauded it. The album was given a 4 out of 5 stars by XXL, who claimed that it is a "wonderful return" for the duo.
Conceived, a women's clothing store in Raleigh, North Carolina, opened on August 20, 2017.
On November 16, 2017, Ma introduced "Wake Me Up," her debut album's first single, and later titled 7 Winters, 6 Summers. Lil' Kim, a fellow New York rapper, and a sample from Kim's "Queen Bitch" from 1996's "Queen Bitch" were included in the program. "Melanin Magic" was released on January 19, 2018, with vocals by Chris Brown and a sample from Mint Condition's "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes). On April 26, 2018, Ma released the song "Company" starring fellow Bronx artist A Boogie wit da Hoodie. From the soundtrack for Uncle Drew, Ma released "New Thang" on June 12, 2018.
Since September 10, 2018, Ma has appeared as a host on the talk show State of the Culture with Joe Budden.
Ma revealed that the album's name had been changed to Reminisce and that a release date was being scheduled in March 2020. Cassie, Cassi, was the character in 2021.
