Career
In late 2010, a Black and music-video client of Los Angeles' ARK Music Factory told her about the company. The black woman paid $4,000 for ARK Music to produce the music video, but the Blacks retained ownership of both the master and the video. On YouTube and iTunes, the single, "Friday," was entirely written by ARK. On February 10, 2011, the song's video was posted on YouTube and received approximately 1,000 views in the first month. The video went viral on March 11, gaining millions of views on YouTube in a matter of days, becoming the most discussed topic on social media site Twitter and receiving mainly negative media coverage. Billboard estimated that the single was released on March 14, with first-week revenues expected to be around 40,000. Black performed the song and discussed the poor reaction to it on March 22, 2001. According to Billboard's Hot 100 and the New Zealand Singles Chart, the song reached its highest peak on the Billboard Hot 100 and the New Zealand Singles Chart at numbers 58 and 33. Black and her mother, Georgina Kelly, became involved with ARK Music over the right to the song shortly after it went viral on YouTube. It was argued that ARK Music failed to comply with the terms of the November 2010 deal by not providing the song and video's master recordings, and by exploiting the music without permission, as shown by the example of selling a "Friday" ringtone. Although Ark founder (and "Friday" co-writer) Patrice Wilson said that Kelly "will get the masters and the song [t]hey can have it all" and that Black was not exclusive to Ark, his counsel stated that Ark owns the copyright for the song, and that the November contract is null. ARK Music Factory began charging $2.99 (equivalent to $3.6 in 2021) to watch the music video on YouTube in June 2011. "Friday" was taken down as a result of the court fight earlier this month; on Black's official channel, it was restored to YouTube on September 16, 2011. "Friday" was revealed as YouTube's No. 1. It's about almost teenage crushes – even if you're not in love yet but you adore a guy – which is something I'm excited about because there are so many out there like that.
