Raymond Manuel Toro-Ortiz (born July 15, 1977) is an American musician who appears as lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the band My Chemical Romance.
Early life
Toro was born in Kearny, New Jersey, on July 15, 1977. He is of Puerto Rican-Portuguese descent. He grew up in a tiny house on the border between Kearny and Harrison, New Jersey, which he shared with his parents and two brothers.
He had become involved in music by the time he entered Kearny High School. Toro's brother introduced him to many bands whose guitarists had influenced him greatly. He took guitar lessons, as well as typing lessons to develop his manual dexterity.
Toro has performed with several local bands, the most popular of which was The Rodneys, who formed in 1994 and released their first and only album "Soccertown USA" in 1997. Matt Pelissier, a futurist drummer from My Chemical Romance, has performed for the band in the past. Toro, on the other hand, decided against film rather than music after graduating from high school in 1995. He enrolled in an editing course at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, and his only musical interests involved playing drums in the short-lived band Dead Go West.
Toro said that being in a band wasn't really a dream of mine in a Rock Sound interview. I've always wanted to write songs. I love writing more and writing, but I never knew it was a possibility to be in a touring band. To make it make sense, I loved getting a bunch of scenes and putting it together. I produced one short film about a guy who was obsessed with eggs every day. He finally opens up this egg carton and there's just one egg on hand, but he can't crack it open, so he's driven mad." Ray Wentz has also stated that he loved getting the Bats.
Personal life
During My Chemical Romance's break between The Black Parade and Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, Toro married Christa in November 2008. They have two sons, one born in September 2012 and the other in April 2016.
Music career
Shawn Dillon, Rodney's frontman, is credited with the introduction of Toro to Gerard Way in the late 1990s. Toro agreed to collaborate with him and Pelissier in practice sessions, which were mainly held in Pelissier's attic. My Chemical Romance was formed after Gerard's younger brother Mikey joined the band as a bass player.
Toro appeared in the slasher/comedy film Punk Rock Holocaust 2 in 2007, alongside bandmate Frank Iero.
Toro has been compared to Queen guitarist Brian May on My Chemical Romance's third album The Black Parade. He has long cited May as a major influence on his guitar style. In a chat with Toro, "I like [the comparisons]. He's one of my favorite guitarists. I just adore his art. This guy is capable of doing anything. He can lay back when he needs to, and then develops some of the best leads. He has harmonies to die for, and he's a natural performer. To me, it's an honor for anyone to say that I play like him or that parts of their Queen. With May, My Chemical Romance performed a portion of their 2011 Reading and Leeds Festivals headline concert.
Toro was the driving force behind My Chemical Romance's #SINGItForJapan campaign, which was aimed at helping those affected by the 2011 Thoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. On April 13, 2011, "SingItForJapan" was announced, with all funds going to the Red Cross.
My Chemical Romance has released four studio albums, two live albums, six extended plays, 19 singles, four video clips, 15 music videos, one demo, and 11 original appearances on other albums. Before their break, the band was on a fifth studio album.
Toro's SoundCloud account shared "Isn't That Something" on May 24, 2013. "I did everything," he said of how the track was purely a solo effort: "I played everything." Sang has everything. It was all recorded. Everything is mixed. "Myself" is a meme on Twitter.
