Early life and education

Jones was born in Los Angeles, California, to actress Peggy Lipton and singer/record producer Quincy Jones. She is the younger sister of actress and model Kidada Jones, as well as half-sister to five siblings from their father's other marriages, including Kenya Jones and Quincy Jones III. Jones' father is an African American with Tikar roots from Cameroon, as well as a Welsh paternal grandfather. Her mother, Ashkenazi Jewish (a descendant of Jewish emigrants from Russia and Latvia), was a descendant of Jewish emigrants from Russia and Latvia. Jones and her sister were raised in Reform Judaism by their mother; Jones attended Hebrew school, but she left at the age of ten and did not have a bat mitzvah.

Jones grew up in Los Angeles' Bel Air neighborhood. "It's the 1970s and still not that acceptable for them to be together," she recalled of her parents' mixed-race marriage. Her father recalled how he would often find the six-year-old Jones under the covers after bedtime, and reading five books at a time with a torch. She has referred to her as a "straight-up geek" and that she "had a floppy disk drive and a dial-up modem before it was cool." Jones demonstrated musical ability from an early age and is able to play classical piano. Jones' mother told Entertainment Tonight in 1990 that she was "also a brilliant singer and songwriter."

Jones attended The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California, where she was named "Most Likely To Succeed" by her classmates and became the National Honor Society's President. Jones was involved with theater at Buckley, under tutelage from acting instructor Tim Hillman. Jones' parents divorced when she was 14 years old; her sister stayed with their father; and Rashida and their mother moved to Brentwood with their father. Jones gained notoriety in 1994 with an open letter in response to rapper Tupac Shakur's scathing remarks regarding her parents' interracial union. They were able to work together, and Shakur eventually became friends with Rashida and her family. At the time of his death, Rashida Jones' sister, Kidada Jones, was dating Tupac.

Rashida Jones attended Harvard University, where she lived in Currier House and Eliot House. She belonged to the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, Harvard Radcliffe Dramatic Club, Harvard-Radcliffe Opportunes, Black Students Association, and the Signet Society. She had intended to become a lawyer but had to reconsider after being disillusioned by the O. J. Simpson murder conviction. She became involved in the performing arts and appeared as musical director for the Opportunes, a cappella group, and appeared in numerous plays. Jones performed in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, a Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, which she described as "healing" because she had been viewed by many black students as not being "black enough" in her second year at college. She studied religion and philosophy and graduated in 1997.

Personal life

Despite being raised Jewish, Jones began practising Hinduism in her early teens with her mother after the two visited an ashram in India. She practices Judaism as an adult.

She told a reporter:

"I have been through periods where I only feel black or Jewish," she has said regarding her multiracial identity. Now I have a healthy balance." "I do identify with being black, and if people don't know me that way, that's their problem." "I'm eager to challenge people's assumptions of what it looks to be biracial."

In February 2003, Jones married music arranger Mark Ronson. On her 27th birthday, she suggested using a custom-made crossword puzzle that spells out, "Will you marry me?" he wrote out. About a year later, their friendship came to an end.

Jones, a singer from Ezra Koenig, had a son together in 2018.
