Early life and education
Ranveer Singh Bhavnani was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India, India (now Mumbai), to Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani. During the Partition of India, his grandparents immigrated from Karachi, Sindh (in modern-day Pakistan). Ritika Bhavnani, his elder sister, is his favorite. Singh is the paternal grandson of actor Chand Burke and is closely linked to actor Anil Kapoor's family through his partner Sunita Kapoor (née Bhavnani). Singh explains that he dropped his surname Bhavnani because he felt that the word "too long, too many syllables" would have been "too long, too many syllables," thus downplaying his brand as a "saleable product."
Singh aspired to be an actor from childhood, appearing in numerous school plays and discussions. However, after he joined H.R., he had a problem. Singh's College of Commerce and Economics discovered that getting a break in film was not easy. Singh, who felt that acting was "too far-fetched," concentrated on creative writing. He then moved to Indiana University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University. He decided to enroll in acting lessons and took up theatre as his minor at the university.
Singh spent a few years as a copywriter for companies like O&M and J. Walter Thompson, after finishing his studies and returning to Mumbai in 2007. He spent time as an assistant director but decided against acting instead. He then decided to give his entire portfolio to directors. He would audition for all sorts of auditions, but no good opportunities were forthcoming, and only got calls for minor roles: "Everything was so bleak." It was terribly frustrating. "I would know if I was doing the right thing or not" at certain times.
Personal life and media image
Deepika Padukone, his co-star in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, began dating Singh in August 2012. The couple announced their impending marriage in October 2018. They married in traditional Konkani Hindu and Sikh Anand Karaj (Singh's paternal grandfather is Sikh) ceremonies at Lake Como, Italy, the following month.
Singh has been on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2012, placing him in the highest position (seventh) in 2019. The magazine estimated his annual incomes to be 1.18 billion (US$15 million) and listed him as the fifth-highest-paid actor in the country in that year. He was also included by GQ in their list of the 50 Most Influential Young Indians of 2017 and 2019. In 2019, India Today named him as one of the country's 50 Most Influential People.

Career
Singh auditioned for a lead role in Maneesh Sharma's Band Baaja Baaraat, a romantic comedy from the production company Yash Raj Films, in 2010. Aditya Chopra, a film actor, was impressed by his performance in the role opposite Anushka Sharma. Singh likened Bittoo Sharma to that of a typical Delhi boy. He spent time with students at the Delhi University campus to prepare for the position. Despite trade journalists' reservations about the film's commercial success, the film premiered as a sleeper hit. Singh's performance was lauded, with Anupama Chopra of NDTV stating that Singh was "pitch flawless" in the role of the small town slacker, who was uncouth but generous." Singh was named Best Male Debut at the annual Filmfare Awards.
Singh signed on for Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl, a romantic comedy directed by Maneesh Sharma and co-starring Anushka Sharma, following Band Baaja Baja Bahl. Ricky Bahl, a conman who conjures girls for a living, has finally met his match. According to Singh, the title character had various avatars in the film, including a chirpy, amusing side, and a sinister one. "Ranveer is, well Ranveer: your everyday Joe hero who comes across as Sunny, Deven, Iqbal, Ricky, his sundry avatars," Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India wrote. Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl: It was a fair game on money, albeit in a modest manner. Singh co-starring Sonakshi Sinha, received critical praise for Vikramaditya Motwane's period romance Lootera (2013). The film is an adaptation of O. Henry's short story The Last Leaf tells the tale of Pakhi Roy Chowdhury, a young Bengali woman who falls in love with Varun Shrivastava, a conman disguised as an archaeologist. Singh "brings a quiet sensitivity to Varun," according to CNN-IBN's Rajeev Masand, as well as occasional smoldering intensity. He leaves a lasting impression" after a finely internalized appearance. Lootera's commercially speaking was weak.
Singh starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's interpretation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, titled Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, in which he portrayed Ram, a Gujarati boy based on Romeo's role. Bhansali was captivated by Singh's appearance in Band Baaja Baaraat and decided to cast him in the film. Critics loved Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela's appearance, as did Singh's. Rohit Khilnani, a writer for India Today, wrote that the film made him want to be a comedian. Singh's biggest commercial success came from the film's worldwide sales of 2.02 billion (US$25 million). Singh was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Singh appeared as a Bengali criminal in Ali Abbas Zafar's Gunday in 2014, alongside Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Irrfan Khan. Even though Singh has the could-be-thankless "good brother" role, Variety's David Chute praised Singh's screen presence and wrote that he "tucks the film's center of interest under his arm and takes it with him." In addition, Singh's chemistry with Kapoor was considered by critic Rohit Khilnani to be the film's greatest asset. Gunday was Singh's biggest box office opener, and with a net income of 1 billion (US$13 million) worldwide, the box office was a hit. Singh appeared in Finding Fanny as a gangster in Shaad Ali's much-anticipated crime drama Kill Dil opposite Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar.
Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), produced by and starring Farhan Akhtar, featured Singh as the younger sibling of a dysfunctional Punjabi business family that aspires to be a pilot. Kunal Guha wrote for Mumbai Mirror that Singh was the film's "surprise element"; he praised his "immaculate comedic timing" and took note of his subtlety. The film did not do well on commercial terms. In the period romance Bajirao Mastani (2015), opposite Padukone and Chopra, he rejoined him next. He portrayed Bajirao I, who shaved his head and prepared himself, for which he hid himself in a hotel room for 21 days. Singh "brings his character to life and does so with both machismo and grace," Raja Sen said, who has praised him for his finer his character's gait and accent. The film earned 3.5 billion (US$44 million) to become one of India's highest-grossing films, and Singh received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Singh appeared in Aditya Chopra's comedy-romance Befikre opposite Vaani Kapoor in 2016. He portrayed Dharam Gulati, a stand-up comedian whose romantic ties with Kapoor's character led to conflict between the two characters. Befikre's fourth project to be directed by Chopra was set in Paris. A nude scene was shot for it by Singh, which was a rare occurrence in an Indian film. Variety's Jay Weissberg found the film to be a "overly optimistic spin on the old friends with benefits theme" and criticized Singh's "manic behavior." It was underperforming at the box office.
In Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama Padmaavat (2018), a ruthless Muslim king starring Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, Singh portrayed Alauddin Khilji, a ruthless Muslim king, marking his third collaboration with Bhansali and Padukone. Right-wing Hindu organisations argued that the film mistook historical fact and launched violent assaults on the cast and crew. After several changes were made to the film, it was postponed and it was allowed for display. HuffPost's Ankur Pathak sluggish and regressive plots, but Singh praised Singh for his "astute brilliance" in depicting Khilji's bisexuality. Rajeev Masand tweeted that he "plays the part with the grotesque flamboyance that makes it impossible to see anyone or anything else when he's on the screen." Padmaavat's production budget, which was more than US$25 million, made it the most expensive Hindi film ever made at that time. Its global gross of over 5.7 billion (US$71 million) puts it in second place and ranks as Singh's highest-grossing debut and is one of India's biggest grossers. He received the Best Actor Award at the Filmfare Critics Awards (shared with Ayushmann Khurrana for Andhadhun) and also received a Best Actor nomination at the ceremony.
Singh played the titular corrupt policeman in Rohit Shetty's action comedy Simmba, based on the Telugu-language film Temper (2015), co-starring Sara Ali Khan and Sonu Sood, which marked his first collaboration with filmmaker Karan Johar, who co-produced the film with Shetty. Despite dislikeing the film, Uday Bhatia of Mint praised Singh for his "cardboard creation" of a woman with a "deeper sweetness" that makes it more winsome than Devgn's Singham's humourless masculinity. Simmba was Singh's second highest-earning Indian film of 2018 with global earnings of 4 billion (US$50 million).
Singh reteamed with Zoya Akhtar on Gully Boy (2019), a musical influenced by the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy. Singh found nothing in common with his image as a poor man who aspires to be a rapper, and so in preparation, he attended acting workshops and spent time with both Divine and Naezy. He performed his own rap songs and was delighted that the film drew attention to India's underground music scene. At the 69th Berlin International Film Festival, the film premiered. Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter praised his "fully expressive emotional range that extends to drama and hip-hop" and writing for Film Companion. Baradwaj Rangan praised his ghetto accent and deemed his understated appearance to be a "superb showman for his range." Gully Boy received a record 13 Filmfare Awards, and Singh received his second Best Actor award.
Singh began hosting The Big Picture, a television game show, in 2021, which lasted for one season. In an extended cameo, he reprised his role as Simmba in Shetty's action film Sooryavanshi (2021). In Kabir Khan's 83 (2021), a sports film based on the 1983 Cricket World Cup, Singh then portrayed cricketer Kapil Dev. 83 was postponed several times due to casting and pre-production, which postponed filming, and later in India due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Singh's portrayal of Dev was praised in the film, and praise was given for the actor's portrayal of Dev. The film, which was made on a worldwide budget of 270 crore, was deemed a box-office bomb and had a worldwide gross of 190.86 crore. Singh's performance earned him his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Jayeshbhai Jordaar, a satire on female infanticide in India, was Singh's first film of 2022. Anna M.M. Vetticad of Firstpost disapproved of the film, but praised him for "transform[ing] his body, body language, and demeanour, his posture, his walk, his movements, and his entire personality" for the role, which was similar to how he had "metamorphosed" to play Dev in 83. The film also failed commercially.
Singh will appear in Rohit Shetty's Cirkus (2022), in which he will appear in multiple roles. He is also scheduled to appear in Karan Johar's romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani opposite Alia Bhatt.
