He was raised mainly in Los Angeles's Van Nuys neighborhood, where his father worked as a college professor. He is often cited as having a Ph.D. in English from University of California, Berkeley, but this is a common mistake, as Saenz had lied about his education in order to get a rented when his credit was being investigated.

Career
Saenz was the lead singer for the David Lee Roth-era Van Halen tribute band Atomic Punks from May 1994 to December 2008, where he performed the stage name David Lee Ralph. Russ Parrish, a former bandmate, formed the group. Saenz was briefly the lead singer for Los Angeles for a short time. On the Wasted EP, guns were featured. He has also performed for the bands 7% Solution, First Cause, Long Gone, and Nightfall (where he also played lead guitar). Nightfall was also featured on the KNAC radio sponsored Pure Rock compilation, with Ralph going under the name Michael Saenz.
Saenz appeared in the 2001 film Rock Star briefly, as seen in the glass booth auditions when Mark Wahlberg's and Jennifer Aniston's characters walk into the audition room. Before Wahlberg's character takes his turn in audition, he glares at the two women. In the episode "Burt Mitzvah: The Musical," he also appeared as the singing voice for Jimmy Chance on the television show Raising Hope, singing the song 'Rock the Torah'.
In 2000, Saenz formed Steel Panther, a satirical metal band formed in Parrish under the name Metal Shop (soon turned into Metal Skool, Danger Kitty [for a commercial], then into Steel Panther). The band has risen to international prominence, and it has many celebrity followers who have performed onstage with them.
On the albums Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground, he provided background vocals for AFI.
