Rajdeep Sardesai (born 24 May 1965) is an Indian news anchor and author.

He is a senior editor at the India Today group and hosts India Today Television.

He was the Editor-in-Chief of Global Broadcast News, which included CNN-IBN, IBN7, and IBN-Lokmat; he resigned in July 2014.

Early life

Sardesai was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to a Goan father and a Gujarati mother. Dilip Sardesai, a former Indian Test cricketer and his mother, Nandini, is an Mumbai entrepreneur and former head of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and former head of the Department of Sociology. He graduated from the Campion School in Mumbai, India, and spent two years of ISC at The Cathedral & John Connon School, Mumbai. He earned a degree in economics from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, shortly. He then transferred to University College, Oxford, where he earned the Bachelor of Arts in jurisprudence (promoted to Master of Arts by seniority) and Bachelor of Civil Law.

He made six first-class cricket appearances for Oxford University and another for a combined Oxford and Cambridge team against the 1987 Pakistani touring team while visiting Oxford University. At Oxford, he was given a cricket Blue.

Personal life

Sagarika Ghose, a journalist and author, is married to journalist Sagarika Ghose. Sardesai and Ghose have two children, son Ishan, and daughter Tarini.

Career

Sardesai worked with The Times of India for six years after joining the paper in October 1988 and being the city editor of its Mumbai edition. He began as the Political Editor of New Delhi Television in 1994 (NDTV). He was the managing editor of both NDTV 24X7 and NDTV India and was in charge of overseeing the news strategy for both groups. At NDTV, he hosted popular shows like The Big Fight.

On April 17, 2005, he left NDTV to start his own business, Global Broadcast News (GBN), in collaboration with the American giant CNN and Raghav Bahl's TV18. The latter stars of CNBC's Indian Edition (in English), CNBC-TV18, the Hindi customer channel, CNBC Awaaz, and SAW's international channel. CNN-IBN announced Sardesai as the Editor-in-Chief of the new channel. On December 17, 2005, it first appeared on television. After Sardesai's firm acquired a 54% interest in the channel, Channel 7 has also fallen under this umbrella. IBN7 was later renamed Channel 7 by the time.

Reliance Industries Ltd, the parent of CNN-IBN, IBN7, and CNBC-TV18, announced on May 29th that it would be acquiring interest in Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd, the parent of CNN-IBN, IBN7, and CNBC-TV18. The board of RIL approved funding for up to 40 billion (US$500 million) to Independent Media Trust (IMT), of which RIL is the sole beneficiary for the acquisition of Network 18 and its subsidiaries. Sardesai, editor-in-chief of CNN-IBN, and the entire founding team — editorial and managerial — all resigned from the Network18 group on July 1, 2014 — subpoena.
