Career
Bhatia, a first-generation American of East African Indian descent, was born in Hickory, North Carolina, and grew up in Raleigh. His interest in music began two sources: his grandfather's reedy, capella interpretations of Ginans, and listening to gangster rap on the radio. In high school, he began playing guitar.
Bhatia graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in neuroscience and economics in 2010 and has lived in Brooklyn, where he has remained. Strata and Yes It Will, the composer-guitarist's first two albums, were described as "exciting real life with the unexpected" and as "approving life in the information age."
In 2014, Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang joined Son Lux, expanding Ryan Lott's solo venture into a trio. They have since been lauded as "the world's most lethal band" and described as "thrilling...an exquisite synthesis of contemporary styles." Son Lux has written, recorded, and published the album Bones and its companion EP Stranger Forms, as well as over 300 shows in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Bhatia has worked with Lorde, Sufjan Stevens, Heems, and David Virelles, as well as the film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Air and Afflicted's soundtracks. He has performed with members of the International Contemporary Ensemble, JACK Quartet, and Alarm Will Sound.
