Rachel Khoo (born 28 August 1980) is a British cook, writer and broadcaster, with her own BBC cooking series.

She is also founder and editor-in-chief of online lifestyle magazine Khoollect.

Early life

Khoo was born in Croydon, South London. She has a younger brother named Michael and attended primary school in Bromley. Her paternal family were Chinese immigrants to Malaysia and were part of the Khoo Kongsi clanhouse in George Town, Penang. Her father is Malaysian Chinese and emigrated to the UK from Ipoh, Perak, at age 16 in 1968. He later met and married her mother, an Austrian native. When Khoo was 12, her father's job in IT took the family to Bavaria, where they lived in the countryside outside Munich for four years. They returned to the UK when she was 16. She attended Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, and earned a degree in art and design.

Personal life

In 2006, Khoo moved to Paris, where she lived for eight years. In 2014, she returned to London, settling in Hoxton, a district of Hackney and then moved to Stockholm in 2016. She previously owned a flat in Kensal Green in north-west London, which served as the headquarters of her now-defunct lifestyle blog/studio, Khoolect. She speaks English, French, German and some Swedish.

In 2014, she became engaged to Swedish man Robert Wiktorin, and they married in 2015. She gave birth to her first child, a boy, in 2016. Her second child, also a boy, was born in early 2019.

Career

Khoo spent two years in public relations for shirt-maker Thomas Pink after graduating from university. She left her career and enrolled in a three-month patisserie course at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris in 2006. She worked part-time as an au pair and sold perfume at Printemps, a luxury department store, while living in Paris. She worked at La Cocotte, a Parisian cookbook store and café, where she taught baking classes and served as the store's pastry chef after graduating from Le Cordon Bleu.

Khoo's first publishing contract for two French-language cookery books, Barres à cé, muesli et granola maison, and Pâtes à tartiner, which were published by Marabout. Both were later translated into English by Rachel Khoo's Muesli and Granola, as well as Rachel Khoo's Sweet and Savory Pâtés. She also worked briefly for Volkswagen as a freelancer, where she managed food-related activities during this period.

Khoo opened a small restaurant to test recipes for her first English-language cookbook, The Little Paris Kitchen, after successfully pitching UK publishers her idea for a new cookbook. She prepared and served food from her Belleville apartment, which could hold just two diners at a time. She quickly gained a large fan base by using social media to promote the restaurant. Rachel Khoo's first TV series was commissioned by the BBC later this year, her first TV series The Little Paris Kitchen: Cooking. Her restaurant ceased operations before the series was started. In Khoo's kitchen and around the city, the six-episode series was shot. On March 19, 2012, it first appeared on British television. The series was eventually broadcast in international markets. In 2012, the Little Paris Kitchen was published. It has been translated into several languages. Both book and television series have received critical and commercial recognition. The book became a best-seller, with more than 120,000 copies being sold. Over 1.5 million viewers watched each version of the television series in the United Kingdom.

In September 2013, Khoo released My Little French Kitchen, her second English-language book, chronicling her travels around France, which was published by Michael Joseph. Every week, My Little French Kitchen was selling over 1,000 copies. Rachel Khoo's Kitchen Notebook: Michel Khoo's Kitchen Notebook: Two new cooking series for BBC Worldwide was completed in 2014. Both series aired in the United Kingdom and internationally. Rachel Khoo's Kitchen Notebook: Cosmopolitan Cook, she explored many European and Eurasian cities, including Stockholm and Istanbul, as well as recipes inspired by her travels. Rachel Khoo's Kitchen Notebook, her book, was published in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2015. She travelled to Malaysia in November 2014 to film an episode of A Cook Abroad.

It is expected to air in Germany, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as on BBC Asia.

When the series returned in spring 2021, Rachel Khooo will be in charge as a new judge on Great British Menu.
