Dame Deborah James's mother shares previously unseen clip of the late cancer campaigner as she pays tribute to her 'zest for life' on her 43rd birthday

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 1, 2024
Dame Deborah James 's mother has paid tribute to her late daughter on what would been her 43rd birthday. Taking to Instagram, the cancer campaigner's mother, Heather James revealed a previously unseen clip of her daughter giving a touching speech in which she wondered about what the future held, at an event prior to her passing. Heather, 66, who is a gymnastics coach, was a strong support for her daughter as she battled bowel cancer, before passing away in June 2022. In the tribute posted to Instagram, she wrote: 'Happy Birthday Deborah on what would have been your 43rd birthday! You may be gone from our sight but will never be gone from our hearts. Your legacy lives on, not just in the work you've done, but in the lives you've touched.

Mother-of-three was diagnosed with bowel cancer at 38 after watching Dame Deborah James describe the tell-tale symptoms on TV

Lyndsey Ainscough, 40, from Leigh in Greater Manchester, was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer after suffering symptoms for several months, but not getting them checked. She recalled how, then 38, she was watching a broadcast of Dame Deborah James talking about the possible signs of the disease, which kills nearly 17,000 Brits every year, while doing the ironing. 'It caught my attention, especially the point about where she was talking about blood when she was going to the toilet, and I turned to my husband and said "do you think I have bowel cancer?",' she told the BBC . It was a question, and a subsequent trip to the GP to get her symptoms checked, which would save her life. Mrs Ainscough saw Dame Deborah's, nicknamed Bowelbabe for her work promoting awareness of bowel cancer, speaking just weeks before the disease killed the journalist on June 28.

As she celebrates six years as the only living original presenter, Dame Deborah James' co-host on You, Me and The Big C reveals she is 'lucky.'
