Oje Ken Ollivierre (born 14 June 1981), also known as Protoje, is a Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter.

Lorna Bennett, a Jamaican singer best known for her 1972 rendition of "Breakfast in Bed," is her mother.

Music career

He was born in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. Protoje's debut appeared on his 2005 mixtape Lyrical Overdose Volume 1, which featured mainly hip hop-influenced songs. Busy Signal's appearance as a guest artist, however, boosted his future as a reggae and dancehall performer. Protoje began collaborating with Don Corleon Records, which is owned by his uncle and well-known Jamaican producer Don Corcorneton. After releasing "Dread," "JA" and "Roll" in 2010, Protoje's debut album, The Seven Year Itch, was released on January 25, 2011. The first single off the album, dubbed "Arguments" (2009), was responsible for his early fame in Jamaica. Ky-Mani Marley appeared on "Rasta Love" in 2011, his second single off the album in 2011.

The 8 Year Affair, his second album, was released on February 12, 2013. "Who Dem a Program" was the first single from the album in January 2012, with "This Is Not a Marijuana Song" following mid-year. "Kingston Be Wise" was heavily promoted on traditional and social media. The music video became Jamaica's most popular YouTube video on the day of its introduction, 5 November 2012. On Twitter, the hashtag #KBW was used. "Kingston Be Wise," a remake of Ini Kamoze's "England be nice") was included in the game "Blue Ark" radio station, boosting the song's success and making the reggae artist a worldwide hit. When recording the album, Protoje cited reggae artist Ini Kamoze and the group Black Uhuru.

Protoje was featured on BBC Radio 1Xtra's 'Hot for 2015' list in December 2014.

Ancient Future was supposed to be released in September 2014 but it was postponed until March 2015. The album was produced by Phillip "Winta" James and it includes the song "Who Knows," a Chronixx collaboration that was released as a single. "Answer to Your Name" and "Criminal" were two tracks from the album's debut as exclusives on BBC 1xtra DJ Toddla T's England Be Wise's Top Reggae Albums chart two weeks after its appearance. In 2022, BPI's "Who Knows" was rated Silver by BPI.

Protoje unveiled Side B of his fourth studio album, Royalty Free, as a free download on his website on June 14, 2016.

In the Best Reggae Album category, his album, A Matter of Time, received a Grammy Award nomination.

Protoje appeared on Chronixx on a remix of Alicia Keys' song Underdog on March 27, 2020.

Protoje and RCA Records announced a new label contract on April 13, 2020. The arrangement gave him "a certain degree of creative control" and included artists Lila Iké and Sevana, who had been mentoring under his own In.Digg.Nation banners.

Protoje's fifth studio album In Search Of Lost Time, which peaked at No. 28 on August 28, 2020. Billboard Reggae Albums chart, number 6 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.

Protoje's sixth studio album, Third Time's Charm, debuted on September 23, 2022, which peaked at No. 11. Billboard Reggae Albums Chart: 8 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
