Prince Paul Career

Life and career

Paul was into music from a young age and started collecting vinyl when he was five years old. He was mature for his age and liked to hang out with his older relatives, according to his late mother.

He started DJing in fifth grade, with a makeshift version of one Lafayette turntable connected to another turntable table and using the balance knob as a fader. Paul performed a DJ set at The Ace Center Amityville in 1981, which earned him fame. He appeared on Trouble Funk's "Pump Me Up" for a period that he later described as his "claim to fame." Since Paul's success at The Ace Center, he began playing dances and tapes with Biz Markie when he was in eighth grade. Everett Collins, a drummer for The Isley Brothers, was in Paul's middle school music instructor. Collins introduced Paul to De La Soul member Maseo later.

During his teenage years, he began performing with groups, first joining Soul Brothers with his longtime buddy Don Newkirk, who would later re-join Paul as a official member of Brookzill. Paul was one of Stetsasonic's founding members. He joined the club in 1984 after impressing Daddy-O with his routine in the "Brevoit Day Celebration" DJ contest in Brooklyn. "Bavern" was a hit on Daddy-O, who recalled him with Liquid Liquid's "Cavern" as "mad at the turntables." Paul cites Grandmaster Flash's "Flash To The Beat" as the reason he bought his drum kit.

On 3rd Bass' 1989 debut The Cactus Album featured Prince Paul's "The Gas Face" and "Brooklyn-Queens." The original version of "The Gas Face" was released on cassette tape and started out as mistake. After Paul found that the pattern wasn't what he wanted, he wanted to change it, but MC Serch and Pete Nice convinced him not to keep it. The album was released on July 4th.

He appeared on De La Soul's first three albums, 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), De La Soul Is Dead (1991), and Buhloone Mindstate (1993). The Source gave a five-mic review of De La Soul is Dead. 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), according to Paul, was on a $20,000 budget and took a month and a half to make. "If there was ever a hint of God, De La Soul would be the proof to me," Brian Coleman wrote about his experience with De La Soul. I've never been in such a good shape in any other industry situation."

Russell Simmons gave Prince Paul an imprint under his Def Jam brand in 1990, but Resident Alien's album It Takes a Nation of Suckers to Let Us In was never officially released. It's an unofficial launch, which is different from a bootleg.

For Boogie Down Productions' Sex and Violence album, Paul produced "Drug Dealer," "Sex and Violence," and "How Not To Get Jerked." Paul later expressed disappointment with the event because the company announced it before he had finalized and polished the three songs. KRS-One, a Boogie Down Productions product, later apologized to Paul.

Prince Paul formed the group Gravediggaz alongside Frukwan of Stetsonic, Too Poetic of Brothers Grimm, and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA. They performed together in 1991 and 1994 on Gee Street Records, releasing their first album Niggamortis/6 Feet Deep. Eazy-E wanted to debut the album on Ruthless Records prior to negotiating on a Gee Street contract. Paul travelled to Los Angeles to speak with Eazy-E and Jerry Heller, but felt the deal was one of the worst he had seen in his career and declined. Paul estimated that it took them about six months to finish the project after the group was signed to Gee Street.

Vernon Reid co-produced guitarist Vernon Reid's debut with Teo Macero in 1995. With Amityville rapper Superstar Amityville, he also produced a Horror CIty album. Horror City is a coproduction project led by Superstar and starring a number of MCs and producers. After capturing the demo, Paul unsuccessfully tried to sell it to various websites. Paul played some of the same instruments on A Prince Among the Thieves and had some of the same people rap on the album, but later said he liked the Horror City originals. After 15 years of running the demo, Paul decided to make it available online as a free download.

Along Wu-Tang Clan, Coolio, and Fat Joe, he appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, America Is Dying Slowly. According to The Source magazine, the CD, which was supposed to raise concerns of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was dubbed a masterpiece.

De La Soul and Prince Paul decided to part ways in 1996, during the early recording sessions for Stakes Is High. Although Paul was not involved in the production of the album, he has praised it in multiple interviews, once stating, "I was going through a major transition period in my life when this album came out." I was trying to figure out what was going to be do; my son was going to be incarcerated, and I was running out of money. A number of things were going on at the time, and in a sense, the album pulled me through everything."

Psychoanalysis: What Is It? Since this, he has released two solo albums: Psychoanalysis: What Is It? Big Daddy Kane, Xzibit, Kool Keith, and Everlast appear in this book A Prince Among Thieves, starring Big Daddy Kane, Xzibit, Kool Keith, and Everlast. When Paul was recording Psychoanalysis, he thought his career was over, and he had a difficult time finding people interested in the project. Many of the vocals were provided by friends of his own, many of whom were unemployed outside of the music industry. "Some people will get butt-hurt about it," he remembered years ago, but so what? During the recording of "Beautiful Night (Manic Psychopath)," it's likely that it's the last record I'll make anyway." The album is very dark and explores date rape, bigotry, and violence.

Russell Simmons had suggested A Prince Among Thieves to Russell Simmons in the early 1990s, but Simmons was not interested. In an interview, he outlined his album aspirations, including wax. "I wanted to make an adult's album." To prepare for the album, he watched many B movies and attempted to borrow scenes from various films. Paul reached out to Vanilla Ice to perform on "Handle Your Time" with Sadat X and Xzibit, in addition to the extensive list of rappers on the record. He also reached out to The Notorious B.I.G. I was supposed to meet up with him the night he was murdered because I was playing a part of the album.

Prince Paul founded Handsome Boy Modeling School with Dan the Automator and their album So... How Is Your Girl? Sean Lennon, Del the Funky Homosapien, Alec Empire, and Don Novello were among the featured performers. He was also paired with Deltron 3030 on their self-titled album for the song The Fantabulous Rap Extravaganza. Prince Paul Barman's debut EP It's Very Stimulating, followed by another Handsome Boy Modeling School album, White People, which welcomed guests including the RZA, Linkin Park, Tim Meadows, and John Oates.

Many guests, such as Chuck D, Ice-T, The Beatnuts, and Wordsworth were included on Prince Paul's 2003 album Politics of the Business. The two of them also worked on a track Paul composed for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie soundtrack.

Paul was named Best Comedy Album at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards for his work on Chris Rock's Never Scared album in 2006, his first appearance of his career.

Several songs by Paul have only appeared on compilations such as Om Records' "Deep Concentration" and Bill Laswell's "Altered Beats."

He released the album Itstrumental in 2005. It encompasses a variety of genres, with major emphasis on past research, particularly from A Prince Among Thieves, being mixed with lighthearted skits of his depression. The Art of Picking Up Women by the Dix is also a hip-hop album that includes a slew of hip-hop's misogyny and a love for 1960s-style R&B.

Before the station was scrapped after it was acquired by Sirius, Paul was the host of XM radio's "The Ill Out Show." The show featured news, classic songs, and interviews with various hip-hop artists.

Baby Elephant, a project by Prince Paul that includes Parliament and Talking Heads keyboardist Bernie Worrell, as well as longtime Paul associate Don Newkirk. An album Turn My Teeth Up! was released in September 2007. George Clinton, Shock G, Yellowman, Reggie Watts, Nona Hendryx, David Byrne, and Gabby La La La are among the many famous people to have appeared on the show.

Paul performed on the album Montezuma's Revenge (2009), cooperating with Oakland rap group Souls of Mischief from 2008 to 2009. Paul told Souls of Mischief member Opio, "I tell the guys that I want to produce the next album." The album was recorded in a rented house, and many of the beats were made with vintage equipment, including an Emu SP-12, Ensoniq ASR-10, Akai MPC-60, and an Akai MPC-2000. In an interview with Paul, he said that "Proper Aim" and "Morgan Freeman Skit" are his two favorite songs from the album.

After Maseo made some public remarks about a reunion, Paul talked openly in an interview about the possibility of doing another De La Soul album in 2012. Paul claims that he begged De La Soul's members to work on a new album on and off since 1999. Though he wanted to do a reunion at one time, it seemed in the interview that he'd delay the possibility partially due to the much more restrictive sampling laws that exist today. "It's great to hear about it, but I kind of like where we left it." There will be so many hopes. I don't think I could do well enough to do another De La record. Especially in a day and age where I can't openly sample like that."

Throwback to the Future Paul's Brazilian hip hop fusion band BROOKZILL followed Throwback to the Future later in his career. In 2016, the US was on the brink of a landslide. Prince Paul appeared on the Gimlet Media podcast Mogul in 2017 about hip-hop producer Chris Lighty.

Prince Paul joined the Creators Advisory Board of Tracklib in 2017. Prince Paul said in a Tracklib interview that "I know Tracklib will help (producers) because it will give everyone the opportunity to sample without having to look over their shoulder. "It's the best thing in the world to hear about it."

Prince Paul co-produced the Gorillaz' "Pac-Man" for the band's Song Machine web series in 2020. This was Prince Paul's first appearance to Gorillaz, whose 2001 debut album was produced by Prince Paul's longtime friend and collaborator Dan The Automator, who co-founded Handsome Boy Modeling School in 1999.
