Premasiri Khemadasa Life

Deshamanya Keerthi Dr. Premasiri Khemadasa (25 January 1937 – October 24, 2008) was a Sri Lankan music composer.

Khemadasa, a student in the United States, wanted to create a new style of music.

He combined Sinhala folk tunes, Hindustani music, Western music, and several other genres of music in his compositions while still adapting them to suit modern music.

Early life

Khemadasa grew up in Talpitiya, Wadduwa, and attended St. John's College Panadura and then Sri Sumangala College Panadura. On the west coast of Sri Lanka, Khemadasa was born the thirteenth child into a poor rural family. In his family, there was no musical heritage. When he was only 6 years old, he was self-taught, learning how to play on cheap bamboo flutes. Khemadasa would not have received formal instruction in music as a child.

On the day he was supposed to take his Senior School Certificate examination, Khemadasa was invited to attend the Radio Ceylon for an interview. He passed the exam ahead of schedule and travelled to the audition. He passed the audition and became a member of Radio Ceylon.

His two children, Anupa and Gayathri, have now joined their father's stream.

With Sirisena Wimalaweera's Roddie Kella, Khemadasa's debut as a film composer came. He introduced a style of music that was unacquainted to Sri Lankan cinema with his score for Bambaru Ewith. He began collaborating with legendary director Lester James Perkins who was composing the soundtrack for films such as Golu Hadawatha and Nidhanaya. Critics lauded his film scores, and he was lauded as the "Khemadasa master" in honor. The use of elements from Classical Western music and other genres in film music has influenced Khemadasa's signature in film music to heighten the emotion implied by the photograph. Giuseppe Verdi and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's compositions are influenced by Western composers of opera.

Premasiri Khemadasa has made his contribution to films like Agnidahaya and more recently to Ammavarune, Lester James Peiris' last film, who has announced his retirement.

Many scores compiled by the master for films including Hansawilak, Thunweniyamaya, Yasa Isuru's acclaim in the field of cinema were expanded. He has also written music for films that have been shot outside of Sri Lanka (Thousand Flowers).

Dr. Khemadasa's contribution to teledramas also brought outstanding masterpieces to the public. His collaboration with director Jayantha Chandrasiri has resulted in amazing products, though Chandrasiri's television series Dandubasnamanaya has demonstrated a new degree of mesmerise. A collection of scores for television dramas, including Chandrasiri's Weda hamine, Sathara denek senpathiyo, Akala sandhya, Dharma Pathiraja's Gangulen egodata, Ella langa wa lawwa, Pura sakmana, and Bandula Vithanage's Asalwesiyo, delighting the audience with unforgettable musical experiences. In addition, he has appeared in the teledrama Sadisi tharanaya by Devinda Koongahage, which is most likely his last work for a teledrama.

He has appeared in stage dramas including Jayantha Chandrasiri's Mora, Ath, and Dharmasiri Bandaranayake's Makarakshaya & Dhawala bheeshana.

In addition, he has composed symphonies such as Muhuda, Mage kale mavni, and Sinhala Avurudda. Pirinivan Mangalya, perhaps the first Buddhist cantata ever composed, was based on the Lord Buddha's death, and it was played at his funeral by the Khemadasa Foundation students.

His extensive knowledge of opera and harmony explains the presence of operatic and harmonic vocals in his music. He made several experiments with singing and playing, including the use of asymmetric beats, neosophical harmonies, and novel approaches to playing musical instruments such as the sitar.

Khemadasa is the only well-known Sri Lankan musician to perform and create opera. He has a large number of students, many of whom were recruited from rural milieus and trained for participation in his operas. Manasawila, Doramandalawa, and Sondura Varnadasi are among his famous operas. Agni, a composer who wrote about ancient civilisation, was he created the opera Agni (opera). His operas, which were written in Sinhalese, take the form of Sinhalese opera. Various countries have hosted performances by Khemadasa and his students. He returned to music, even in his seventies, after a layoff following a kidney transplant, hoping to secure Sri Lankan music's future. He was 71 years old at the time of his demise on October 24, 2008.
