Pragyan Ojha Life

Pragyan Prayash Ojha (born 5 September 1986) is an Indian cricketer, who has represented India in Test, ODIs and T20.

He is an attacking slow left arm orthodox bowler and left-hand tail-ender batsman.

He currently plays for Hyderabad in the domestic Ranji Trophy and also has played for Bengal as a guest player in Ranji Trophy for couple of seasons (2015/16-2016/17).

He has achieved World no 5 as his career best ranking in ICC Player Rankings.

He is the first and one of the two spinners to ever win the Purple Cap in the Indian Premier League.

He has joined Bihar cricket team as a guest player for 2018/19 season of Ranji Trophy.

Personal life

Pragyan was born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He moved to Hyderabad at the age of 13 and since then he has been residing there with his family. His parents are Maheswar Ojha (retired State Govt. Officer) and Bidulata Ojha (M.A in Literature). On 16 May 2010 he married Karabee Baral, daughter of Kailash Chandra Baral and Chanchala Naik both professors at English and Foreign Languages University.

Career

In 2004,/05, Ojha made his debut in first-class cricket and then represented India at the under-19 level as well. He took home 29 wickets in only six games during the 2006–07 Ranji Trophy season, bringing an average of 19.89. The left arm spinner is known for his ability to spin the ball.

He began playing cricket at the age of ten when he joined Sahid Sporting Club for a summer camp in Bhubaneswar under Sasang S Das, who was also studying at D.A.V. Chandrasekharpur's public school. He moved to Hyderabad and joined Bhavan's Sri RamaKrishna Vidyalaya in Secunderabad's Sainikpuri, Secunderabad, where he chose cricket as his profession under his coach T. Vijay Paul's tute.

From 2004 to 2015, Ojha played for Hyderabad Cricket Association in domestic cricket and then played for Cricket Association of Bengal as a guest player for a short time (2015/16-2016/17). In the Indian Premier League, he has appeared for the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. His superb results in the first two seasons of domestic cricket and the IPL guaranteed his selection in the Bangladesh tour and Asia Cup in 2008.

On June 28, 2008, he played his first One Day International match against Bangladesh in Karachi, ending up with figures of 2/43.

In India's 100th Test victory, Ojha made his Test debut in the Second Test against Sri Lanka in Kanpur on November 24, 2009, replacing Amit Mishra and gaining Test figures of 2/37 off 23 overs and 2/36 off of 15.3 overs. In the third Test, he took five wickets at 28.66 in two Tests. Ojha was the 800th and final Test victim of Muttiah Muralitharan, the highest wicket taker in Test history.

He took 4/21 in four overs on his T20 debut against Bangladesh on June 6, 2009. He was named Man of the Match for his outstanding and match-winning performance.

He has excelled in the six IPL versions, earning him the respect of his captain Adam Gilchrist and Sachin Tendulkar. He was all the more successful in the second season, which guaranteed his selection in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England. He was given the Purple Cap for taking the most wickets in the tournament at IPL3. He has been part of three IPL champion squads (1 for Deccan Chargers and 2 for Mumbai Indians) & 2 for Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians & 1 champions League is the premier league tournament in Mumbai.

He signed for Surrey for the final few weeks of the 2011 season in August, 2011. Surrey defeated Surrey Surrey in Division One of the LV County Championship after 24 wickets in four games.

During the first Test of the West Indies Tour of India in November, he staged a spectacular comeback taking 6 wickets for 72 runs in the first innings.

Since his conduct was determined to be unlawful, Ojha was banned from bowling in competitive cricket in December, 2014. Ojha passed the exam and was allowed to resume bowling later this month.

Venkatapathy Raju, who was also a left-arm spinner, inspired him to play for India, according to Ojha in a 2008 interview.

He moved from Hyderabad to Bihar in advance of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.

He has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on February 21, 2020. He played 48 international matches, including 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and 6 T20Is, from 2008 to 2013. In his last game for India, a Test against the West Indies in 2013, Sachin Tendulkar's farewell match, he finished with match figures of 89 and was named Man of the Match.
