Porter Robinson Career

Career

Robinson, who was mainly self-taught, began producing at the age of 12. When releasing his early music on online forums, he met future collaborator Madeon, who was using the aliases "Daemon" and "Wayne Mont." He released "hands up" music from 2005 to 2010, under the alias "Ekowraith" on YAWA Recordings. Robinson then began making music that he referred to as "complextro," introducing classically inspired melodies and complicated fills to his repertoire. Robinson began to record music under his own name in 2010 and released a variety of original singles on Glamara Records and Big Fish Recordings. Robinson's most well-known debut on Beatport was "Say My Name," which made him the first entry into mainstream dance music. Robinson, eighteen years old at the time, began to gain international attention, catching the eye of dubstep producer Skrillex. He signed a one-EP contract with Owsla, which later became Skrillex's own brand, in order to debut the eleven-track Spitfire. It was the first time OWSLA released a new version, leading to the loss of iTunes Dance and Beatport's overall chart, as well as the loss of its servers on launch. Robinson dropped "Language" on April 10, 2012, via Big Beat Records in North America, and Ministry of Sound everywhere else. The song was made in a different way from Robinson's "complextro" sound, favoring a more melodic sound and a dream-like piano lead. The song climbed to the top of the overall charts on Beatport as well as the iTunes Dance chart. On January 27, the single was first broadcast on BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. On August 1, 2012, a music video directed by Jodeb was posted on Ministry of Sound's YouTube channel. The song was also included as the menu music for the 2012 video game Forza Horizon. Robinson embarked on his "Language Tour" throughout the year of 2012, which was sponsored by artists Mat Zo and the M Machine.

Robinson co-wrote Zedd's top ten hit "Clarity" as well as singing backing vocals. The track was originally supposed to be released as a joint venture between the two artists called "Poseidon" and his tour, but Robinson backed down and withdrew his name because he wasn't going to release a pop single while doing something that wasn't on the radio" with his debut album. "Easy," Mat Zo's collaborative single, was exclusively on Beatport by Ministry of Sound on December 17, 2012, and spent two weeks as the number one overall track on the Beatport Top 100 chart. The full official launch took place in spring 2013 and was followed by an animated music video.

On August 12, 2014, Porter's debut studio album Worlds was released by Astralwerks and Virgin EMI. The album remained more focused on melodies in order to instill a sense of nostalgia, juxtaposing the perceptive bass driven tracks he had released before. Robinson worked with several vocalists and musical groups, including Urban Cone, Lemaitre, Breanne Düren, and Amy Millan. He made his public vocal debut on "Sad Machine" on the single. Avanna, the Vocaloid software voice, was also used as a vocalist on this album. Robinson then embarked on the World Live tour, a new live show that involved him performing, playing synthesizers, and triggering samples that had been embraced by artists Giraffage and Lemaitre. The tour featured famous music festivals, including Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Coachella. On October 2, 2015, Worlds Remixed, a Worlds Remixed remix album, was released. It featured remixes by electronic artists Odesza, San Holo, Mat Zo, Electric Mantis, Galimatias, Galimatias, Last Island, Chrome Sparks, Deon Custom, Rob Mayth, Sleepy Tom, and Slumberjack. Robinson revealed on his Twitter account on January 31, 2016, after being "stuck" for a year and a half, which resulted in him producing new content. He released "Shelter," a joint effort with fellow musician and friend Hugo Leclercq, better known by his stage name Madeon, on August 11. On October 18, a animated music video for "Shelter" was released, animated by A-1 Pictures and jointly produced by Robinson, A-1 Pictures, and Crunchyroll. Robinson and Leclercq followed Robinson and Leclercq on a nearly year-long joint international tour dubbed "Shelter Live Tour," where the two performers performed together onstage, alongside Danger, Robotaki, and San Holo.

Robinson announced via his Twitter page on October 25, 2017 that he had "Eon Break" under the alias Virtual Self. On Robinson's YouTube channel, abstract three-dimensional art and cryptic messages were also published, with abstract three-dimensional art and cryptic messages seemingly focusing on the words "angel," "virtual," "void," and "utopia." "Ghost Voices" was his sequel to his debut on November 8, 2017. Robinson's YouTube channel had an accompanying music video for the track on February 28, 2018. "Ghost Voices" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in January 2019, marking Robinson's first nomination. Robinson reflected on his achievement by playing three Virtual Self sets in Los Angeles before the awards ceremony. Robinson claims he discovered the nomination through Twitter "of all places." He hadn't even known "Ghost Voices" was up for consideration at the time.

On November 29, 2017, Virtual Self unveiled a self-titled EP. On December 8, 2017, he performed in Brooklyn, New York City, for the first time. Virtual Self exhibitions in 2018 continued, with appearances at many festivals, including Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Bonnaroo, as well as three Europe shows and a two-month North American "UTOPiA SySTEM" tour. On July 20, 2018, Robinson's happy-hardcore infused remix of "Ghost Voices" was also released. Robinson announced the Multiverse Music Festival, a one-day festival in Oakland, California, with a self-curated line and co-presented by Goldenvoice, scheduled for June 15 in Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. Due to concerns from local promoters who had planned a festival in Oakland with a similar name the previous year, the festival was shortened to Second Sky Music Festival four days later. Due to tickets for the first date's selling out quickly, a second day was added during presale, with only one act from the first day's lineup. In an interview with Pollstar, Robinson said, "I have this aspiration to attend an artist-curated festival is because all of my favorite music can coexist." Robinson revealed another Virtual Self display, a series of six DJ sets under his own name, and two more Virtual Self shows shortly after announcing Second Sky's lineup. In June 2019, Robinson's organisation, The Robinson Malawi Fund, donated $160,000 to patients with Burkitt Lymphoma in Malawi, who were in need of funds raised by the Second Sky Music Festival and matched donations from Robinson. After his brother Mark died of cancer in June 2019, Robinson founded the Robinson Malawi Fund in June 2019. Robinson joined the Recording Academy on May 9, 2020 and donated $115,000 to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund, which was financed by the Secret Sky Online Music Festival. "Look at the Sky," he performed at the launch of his upcoming album, "Look at the Sky," he announced during the performance. The album was later revealed to be Nurture's fourth single.

Robinson's social media revealed his second album, Nurture, and the debut of "Get Your Wish" on January 29, 2020, as well as a 52-second teaser. The song includes vocals that are artificially pitched up to sound childlike, a feature that is present in many songs on the album. Robinson's second single, "Something Comfort," was released on his album on March 10, 2020. On March 25, 2020, a music video was released. In an interview, Robinson says that the album started in 2015 and 2016 as the first song he remembered and wanted to keep on the record. Nurture's rollout will resume on June 14, 2020, one day before his twenty-eighth birthday. The Anamana man's remix of "Get Your Wish" was unveiled, and a week later, DJ Not Porter Robinson unveiled his own remix. Robinson released a live version of his album "Shepherdess" on August 12, 2020, the sixth anniversary of his Worlds album's debut, which was seen during his Worlds Live shows. In addition, he revealed that the album's "Hollowheart" will be released on the tenth anniversary of the album's debut. The song was supposed to be on the Worlds album but it was released too late.

Robinson's third single, "Mirror," was released on August 26, 2020. On September 9, 2020, a music video was uploaded on YouTube. Nurture was entirely complete, according to Robinson on December 18, 2020, and that the album would be released in "a few months." About a month later, he announced that his fourth single, "Look at the Sky," would be released on January 27, 2021. On the same day, Robinson announced that Nurture would be released on April 23, 2021, and that the album would be available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats as well as merchandise. On Robinson's YouTube channel two weeks after, a music video for "Look at the Sky" premiered. Robinson revealed on Twitter on February 26, 2021, that the fifth single from his 14-song album, "Musician," will be released on March 3. A preview of the song and its music video was attached to his tweet. Robinson shared the backstory of the song's writing and production process, saying "there is a version of'musician' that i believe was the last version, where it was completely off the rails and it wasn't a pop song at all," after its introduction. Later this year, he says that this version of the song will eventually be performed at his forthcoming live show. "It was one of the last songs I wrote for the album," Robinson said in a press release, "it's really a commemoration of the album itself." It was revealed later that the album's main instrument was sampled from an uninhibited collaboration between Robinson and British indie-pop band Kero Bonito. Soon after, an anime inspired music video was released.

A deluxe version of Nurture was due to be released exclusively in Japan on March 17, 2021, with a bonus song from the Japanese band Wednesday Campanella. Robinson released Unfold, the album's sixth and final single, on April 22, 2021, one day before the album's unveiling of Nurture. Nurture was born on April 23, 2021, 2021. The album will be included on year-end charts, including Billboard's "Best Albums of 2021." Robinson premiered the Nurture live show on April 24, 2021, during his own virtual music festival Secret Sky. Robinson announced the tour for Nurture Live Show on May 10, 2021, in favor of Nurture.

Robinson's Air to Earth project (stylized as Air2EarthTM), a live-only initiative focusing on "sample-driven, tranquility proghouse, and airy disco), was announced on September 8, 2021. On September 19, 2021, Robinson performed Air to Earth at his 2021 Second Sky music festival in Oakland, California.

In collaboration with the video game League of Legends, Robinson released "Everything Goes On" on July 14, 2022. Robinson's first appearance since Nurture is remembered, as part of the Star Guardian 2022 tournament in League of Legends, "Everything Goes On" is Robinson's first appearance since Nurture.
