Pierre Dulaine (born 23 April 1944) is a dance instructor and choreographer.
He invented the Dulaine method of teaching dance.
He also founded Dancing Classrooms, a social and Emotional growth programme for 5th-grade students in which ballroom dancing is a means to change the lives of the children and their families. In the film Taking the Lead, starring Antonio Banderas as Pierre Dulaine, noting that his early experiences with children were fictionalized. Early life and education
In 1944, Pierre Dulaine was born in Jaffa, British Mandate Palestine. His Irish father was stationed in British Mandate Palestine; his mother is Palestinian. His parents immigrated to Israel in 1948. Dulaine's family settled in Amman, Jordan, after eight months of relocating frequently, first in Cyprus, then in England and Ireland. The Suez Crisis in 1956 prompted Dulaine's parents to flee the area, eventually settling in Birmingham, England.
Career
Dulaine began his dancing career at the age of 14, and enrolled as a professional dancer when he was 18. He took three further majors examinations at the age of 21 and became a full member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
He performed at the London Hippodrome in 1971 as well as at L'Hirondelle, a nightclub. With the Bluebell Troupe from Paris, Dulaine relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, where she spent a year at the Nairobi Casino in cabaret. He then became cruise director for a ship sailing from New York City to the Caribbean Islands. He then worked at an Arthur Murray dance studio.
In January 1976, Dulaine Marceau, who had appeared in the dance studio in 1973, became dance partners with Yvonne Marceau. The pair met in England with John DelRoy and received many accolades. They co-founded the American Ballroom Theatre Company with Otto Cappel in 1984. In October 1984, the company debuted at the Dance Theatre Workshop in October 1984 and toured extensively in the late 1980s. Both stars appeared in Tommy Tune's Broadway show Grand Hotel from 1989 to 1990, the pair ending with a five-month run in the West End.
The New York City Department of Education developed the Dancing Classrooms program in 1994. To encourage children to dance together, he also invented the "Dulaine Method" to inspire children to dance. He later travelled to Northern Ireland to teach the same curriculum. In 2011, Dulaine returned to Jaffa, the city of his birth, to teach the technique and make the 2013 film Dancing in Jaffa.
