Early life
Brosnan was born on May 16, 1953 in Drogheda, County Louth, and the only child of May (née Smith) and carpenter Thomas Brosnan. Pierce Brosnan, who was named after his parents' surnames: John Brosnan and Margaret Pierce, has the same name as him. He lived in Navan, County Meath, for a year, and said in 1999 that it was his hometown. When Brosnan was a child, his father abandoned the family. When he was four years old, his mother moved to London to work as a nurse. He was largely brought up by his maternal grandparents, Philip and Kathleen Smith, from that point forward. He lived with an aunt and then an uncle until his death, but he was then sent to live in a boarding house run by a woman named Eileen. "Childhood was remarkably solitary," he later said. I had no idea my father was born. He left as an infant. [...] the mother suffered a lot to be an Irish Catholic in the 1950s and have a marriage that was not there, a father who was not there, and a father who wasn't there. My mother was very brave. She took the brave decision to leave England and become a nurse. Basically, we all want a happier life for her and myself. My mother came home once a year and twice a year."
Brosnan was born in a Catholic family and taught in a De La Salle Brothers local school while serving as an altar child. He and his mother and her new husband, William Carmichael, were reunited in Scotland on August 12th, 1964. For the first time (Goldfinger) at the age of 11, Carmichael brought Brosnan to see a James Bond film for the first time (Goldfinger). They then returned to London, where Brosnan was educated at Elliott School in Putney, now known as Ark Putney Academy. "If you go to a big city, a metropolis like London, as an Irish boy of ten years old," he said. And if you're Irish, you're Irish. They make it seem; the British have a marvelous way of doing it, and I had a strong sense of being an outsider." His nickname at school was simply "Irish."
Brosnan left school at 16 and began studying at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. When attending a rehearsal for a workshop at the Oval House, he noticed a fire eater teaching people how to eat fire and wanted to participate. He then spent three years as an actor at the Drama Centre London. "When I first found acting or acting discovered me, it was a liberation," decribing the feeling of becoming an actor and the clout it had on his life. It was a stepping stone to another life, away from a life that I had lived in, and acting was something I enjoyed doing, something that was lauded. It was a wonderful fulfillment in my life.
Personal life
Brosnan has married twice, since being widowed twice, and he has five children and three grandchildren. He met Australian actress Cassandra Harris through her stepson David Harris, Richard Harris' uncle, just after leaving drama school. "What a beautiful looking woman" on meeting her, he said. I never thought she was someone I'd spend 17 years of my life with. I didn't think about wooing her or trying to woo her; I just wanted to enjoy her beauty and who she was." They started dating and bought a house in Wimbledon. Sean, the couple's oldest son, was born on September 13th, 1983 and later became an actor, died in December 1980. They both lived with Harris' children, Charlotte (1971–2013), and Chris, and Brosnan adopted them after their father Dermot Harris died in 1986; they then adopted their surnames, which later adopted his surname. Brosnan appeared in West End plays and television films early in their friendship. After Harris appeared in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only in 1981, they obtained a bank loan and moved to Southern California, where Brosnan was cast in the title role of the television series Remington Steele, assueasing their financial worries.
Remington Steele's episode, which was shot in Ireland, received a lot of attention. Brosnan was seated at his hotel when Brosnan was an infant. He hoped to find a "very tall man," but instead described his father as "a man of medium height, pushed-back silver hair, flinty eyes, and a twizzled jaw" with "a twizzled jaw." He regretted that they were in public spaces and wished for a more private relationship.
Harris became seriously ill while filming The Deceivers in Rajasthan in 1987 and died on December 28, 1991 at the age of 43. Brosnan struggled to cope with her death: she had to beggars over her.
Brosnan had always wanted Brosnan to play James Bond, but the actor was unable to perform the role in 1995, four years since her death. Charlotte was the adopted daughter of his adoptive father who died of ovarian cancer on June 28, 2013.
In 1994, Brosnan met American journalist Keely Shaye Smith in Mexico. They were married in 2001 at Ballintubber Abbey in Ireland. Dylan and Paris are their two sons, who live together. They live in Malibu, California, with a second American home in Hawaii and Irish residences in Dublin and County Meath. The $18 million Malibu home caught fire on February 11, 2015, resulting in $1 million in damages. Fires burned the garage, including Brosnan's 2002 Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, spreading to a bedroom above, and no injuries were reported; no injuries were sustained.
Queen Elizabeth II made Brosnan an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire in July 2003 for his "outstanding contribution to the British film industry." He is ineligible to receive the full OBE accolade, which is restricted to a resident of the Commonwealth realms, but he does still have the letters "OBE" after his name. He received an honorary degree from the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2002, and University College Cork a year later. He became an American citizen on September 23, 2004, while retaining his Irish citizenship. "My Irishness is in everything I do," he said. It's the essence of who I am as a man, an actor, and a father. "I'm from here." When asked by a fan if people mistook his nationality because of his relatively neutral accent, he replied, "It amuses me in some respects that they should confuse me with an Englishman." I don't generally fly under any flag, but it doesn't bother me."
Brosnan has voiced disdain for his Christian Brothers education, but he wrote in 2013.
He attends Mass but also adheres to other spiritual beliefs, quoting his love for "the teachings of Buddhism philosophy" in 2008, which he also referred to as his "own private faith." "I don't preach it," he said, "but it's a faith that is a comfort to me when the night is long."
Career
Brosnan began working at the York Theatre Royal as an acting assistant stage manager, making his debut in Wait Until Dark. He was chosen by playwright Tennessee Williams to appear in McCabe's British premiere of The Red Devil Battery Sign (billed as "Pierce Brosman" in fewer than six months. His appearances sparked a stir in London, and Brosnan also received Williams' telegram, saying only "Thank God for you, my dear boy." Franco Zeffirelli selected him to appear in the film Filumena by Eduardo De Filippo against Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay in 1977.
Brosnan's career continued in films including The Long Good Friday (1980) and The Mirror Crack (1980), as well as early television appearances in Murphy's Stroke and Play for Today. With his leading role in the popular television series Manions of America, he became a television star in the United States. He followed this closely in 1982 with the BBC's nine-part miniseries Nancy Astor (which aired in America on Masterpiece Theatre) that chronicled Lady Astor's life, becoming the first woman to vote in the British Parliament. Robert Gould Shaw II's portrayal earned him the Best Supporting Actor award in 1985.
Brosnan migrated to Southern California in 1982 and gained a following in the United States, playing the title role in the NBC romantic, often-comedic detective series Remington Steele. "Maybe make it as a young James Bond," the Washington Post said the previous year. Brosnan continued to appear in many films, including The Fourth Protocol (1987), a Cold War drama in which he appeared alongside Michael Caine, The Deceivers, and James Clavell's Noble House (1992). Running Wilde, a NBC pilot shooting with Jennifer Love Hewitt's daughter, died in 1992, but the pilot never aired. He appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire, a comedy film from 1993. He appeared in several television films, including Victim of Love (1991), Death Train (1993), and Night Watch (1995), a Hong Kong spy thriller set in a mystery thriller. Brosnan was named with the Irish Film and Television Academy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Irish Film in 2003.
Brosnan first met James Bond film director Albert R. Broccoli on the sets of For Your Eyes Only as his first wife, Cassandra Harris, had been cast as Countess Lisl von Schlaf, mistress to Milos Columbo. "If he can act, he's my guy," Broccoli said of inheriting Bond from Roger Moore's role. Both Entertainment Tonight and the National Enquirer announced that Brosnan was going to take over another role from Moore's, that of Simon Templar in The Saint. Brosnan denied the rumors in July 1993 but later said, "it's still languishing on someone's desk in Hollywood."
Remington Steele was cancelled by NBC in 1986. The publicity as Brosnan was given the role of James Bond, boosting Remington Steele's ratings and ensuring Brosnan was back to the show, contractually requiring Brosnan to return to the role. Due to this, Eon Productions would have to look elsewhere for the new 007. Timothy Dalton was later employed by the producers for The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989). Although Brosnan was reluctant to discuss losing the Bond role in part because Dalton was a friend, he appeared in Diet Coke commercials depicting what the Los Angeles Times described as "a dashing Bond-like character," and NBC promoted Noble House with Brosnan dressed in a Bond-like tuxedo. The conclusion of a planned third Dalton film in 1991 resulted in the cancellation of a planned third Dalton film in 1991, which placed the Bond production process on a holdout for many years. Dalton's decision not to return for a third film after the legal issues had been addressed. Brosnan was announced as the fifth actor to appear in Bond on June 7th.
Brosnan was accepted in a three-film Bond contract with the possibility of a fourth. The first GoldenEye film in 1995 earned the fourth highest worldwide gross of any film since Moonraker, adjusted for inflation. It has a 78% Rotten tomato score, though Metacritic holds it at 65%. Roger Ebert rated Brosnan's Bond as "more sensitive, more vulnerable, and more complete" than the previous ones, as well as focusing on Bond's "loss of innocence" since previous films in the Chicago Sun-Times. Brosnan was described as "a clear improvement over his immediate predecessor" with a "flair for wit to go along with his natural charm," James Berardinelli said, but that "only one-quarter of Goldeneye is momentum-killing padding."
Brosnan founded Irish DreamTime in 1996, alongside producer and longtime friend Beau St. Clair. In 1998, Brosnan and St. Clair launched The Nephew, Ireland DreamTime's first film. The Thomas Crown Affair, the company's second studio project, was launched one year later, and it met both critical and box office success.
Brosnan was involved in the sequels Tomorrow Never Dies and 1999's The World Is Not Enough, both of which were also popular. Brosnan performed in 2002 for the fourth time as Bond in Die Another Day, receiving mixed feedback from the former two, but the box office was a hit. Brosnan himself later criticized several aspects of his fourth Bond film. During the interview, he said that he would like to continue his work as James Bond: "I'd like to do something else." Connery scored six points. Six would be a lot, but never come back." When accepting the role, Brosnan asked Eon Productions to be able to work on other Bond films. The request was accepted, and Brosnan appeared in at least two other mainstream films, including several he directed, from a scientist in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! to a title role in Grey Owl, which chronicles the life of Englishman Archibald Stansfeld Belaney, one of Canada's first conservationists.
The media began to wonder if Brosnan would reprise his role for a fifth time shortly after the introduction of Die Another Day. Brosnan was approaching his 50th birthday at the time. Brosnan kept in mind that both fans and commentators were dissatisfied with Roger Moore's appearance until the age of 57, but that he was receiving a lot of love from both critics and the franchise fanbase for his fifth instalment. For this reason, he was remarkably upbeat about returning to his role. Brosnan dismissed himself from the role in October 2004. Although Brosnan had often been considered as a candidate to play 007, he had denied it several times, and he announced on his website that he was done with the role in February 2005. On October 14, 2005, Daniel Craig took over the role. When Brosnan was asked what he thinks of Craig as the new James Bond in an interview with The Globe and Mail, he said no. "I'm looking forward to it, as we're all looking forward to it," he said. Daniel Craig is a natural actor and he'll do a fantastic job" in his new role. In an interview with the International Herald Tribune, he reiterated his support for the project "[Craig's] on his way to becoming a memorable Bond." Brosnan later admitted that he was hurt by the time of his service; "Barbara [Broccoli] and Michael [Wilson] were on the line; "We're so sorry." She was screaming, Michael was stoic, and he said, 'You were a genius James Bond.' Thank you very much, and I said, 'Thank you very much.' "Goodbye,' he said.' "That was it." I was completely shocked and then threwled to the ground with the way it was dismissed.
Brosnan appeared in James Bond video games during his time on James Bond's tenure. In the James Bond video game Nightfire's 2002, Brosnan's likeness was used as the face of Bond (voiced by Maxwell Caulfield). Brosnan appeared in Everything or Nothing in 2004, allowing for his likeness to be used as well as doing the voice-work for the character. In 2001, he appeared alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and Geoffrey Rush in The Tailor of Panama, and lent his voice to The Simpsons episode "Teehouse of Horror XII" as a robot.
Brosnan has discussed funding a film about Caitlin Macnamara, poet Dylan Thomas Thomas' wife, in which Miranda Richardson will play the title role. Daniel Rafferty, a first post-Bond worker in 2004, was the subject of Laws of Attraction by Brosnan. Brosnan's appearance, according to entertainment.ie's Garth Murphy, was "remarkably convincing, gently riffing off his James Bond persona and supplementing it with a raffish attitude." Brosnan appeared in After the Sunset with Salma Hayek and Woody Harrelson in the same year. The film received mostly critical feedback and was largely rejected at the box office. The Matador, Brosnan's next film, was released in 2005. In a Mexican bar, he played Julian Noble, a jaded, neurotic assassin who encounters a travelling salesman (Greg Kinnear). The film received generally positive feedback. Brosnan's performance was the best of his career, according to Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. Brosnan had been nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, but he was disqualified for Walk the Line in Joaquin Phoenix. Brosnan narrated The Official Film of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, directed by Michael Apted.
Brosnan appeared in the film Seraphim Falls alongside fellow Irishman Liam Neeson in 2007. According to average reviews, the film was released on January 26, 2007 to limited screenings. Brosnan and Neeson, according to Kevin Crust of the Los Angeles Times, were "impressive rivals"; "More," Michael Schlehner of The Hollywood Reporter said, they were "hard-pressed to bring some much-needed vitality to their sparse lines." Brosnan wrote about making a western with fellow Irish actors Gabriel Byrne and Colm Meaney earlier this year. Brosnan appeared in Butterfly on a Wheel for the same year as Tom Ryan. The film was released in the United States under the name of Shattered and Desperate Hours, as well as in Europe.
Brosnan appeared in the film version of the ABBA's Mamma Mia! in 2008. Sam Carmichael, one of three men suspected of Sophie's father (Amanda Seyfried), was portrayed by Steffiep, while Sophie's mother appeared. "Pierce has a certain smooch factor," the film's producer, Judy Craymer, said, "and we suspect he'll have a chemistry with Meryl in a romantic comedy." Brosnan's preparations for the role included walking up and down the coast and singing karaoke to his own voice for about six weeks, followed by rehearsals in New York, which he described as "dreadful." In separate reviews, Brosnan's singing in the film was generally disparaged by observers, with his singing compared to the sounds of a water buffalo, a donkey, and a wounded raccoon. Brosnan provided the narration for Thomas & Friends' film The Great Discoverers in September 2008. He had intended to appear on both US and UK from Series 12 to Series 14, but decided against it for unknown reasons.
Brosnan completed The Ghost Writer, a well-received British Prime Minister starring Roman Polanski, directed and produced in 2009. At the Berlin International Film Festival, the film received a Silver Bear. In Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, he appeared in Remember Me and Chiron. Brosnan appeared as Philip in the Danish romantic comedy Love Is All You Need in 2012.
Brosnan was honoured patronage of Trinity College, Dublin, in February 2013. He also appeared in No Escape as a "heroic government agent" and appeared opposite Owen Wilson. Brosnan was supposed to appear in Last Man Out, a crime film based on Stuart Neville's book "The Twelve" (known as Ghosts of Belfast in the United States) by Craig Ferguson and Ted Mulkerin, with director Terry Loan as the pilot. However, it didn't come to fruition after years of development, and Brosnan is no longer attached to the business.
Brosnan appeared in television commercials as a tongue-in-chance version of himself to advertise the introduction of Sky Broadband in Ireland in 2013. Brosnan was supposed to appear in The November Man, Bill Granger's version of There Are No Spies, in 2005. But the scheme was shelved in 2007. After its demise, Brosnan's production company, "Irish DreamTime," revived The November Man in 2012, with an announcement that he is returning to the spy arena. Brosnan was in Serbia a year later as a former CIA agent named Devereaux, as well as co-star Olga Kurylenko in a supporting role. The film was received poorly, with a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 38/100 on Metacritic. He appeared alongside Milla Jovovich in a suspense thriller film directed by Phil Shelby called Survivor, which began filming in January 2014, starring Charles and Irwin Winkler and James McTeigue. Brosnan appeared in I.T., a revenge drama that was published in September 2016, limited availability and on demand.
In a television adaptation of Philipp Meyer's book The Son of Eli McCullough, Brosnan replaced actor Sam Neill, with Kevin Murphy as both executive producer and showrunner of the series, which aired for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. In 2017, Brosnan appeared in The Foreigner, opposite Jackie Chan, as Liam Hennessy, an IRA man and government official. The Foreigner was shot in London and was directed by Martin Campbell, who previously worked with Brosnan on his debut James Bond film, GoldenEye. Brosnan's character was recalled to Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams, according to the author.
Brosnan would have appeared in a film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 1950 novel Across the River and into the Trees, a third time collaboration with director Martin Campbell. However, the reluctance of investors to finance the project, as well as several delays, caused Brosnan and Campbell to cancel out of the project. Paula Ortiz was later hired to direct the film, and Liev Schnan was later promoted to direct Brosnan in the lead role.
In 2018, Brosnan co-starred with Guy Pearce and Minnie Driver in a mystery thriller film called Spinning Man, based on George Harrar's book of the same name. In the sequel to Catherine Johnson's Mamma Mia!, Sam Carmichael appeared in a later version titled Mamma Mia! We're Back, Along with the majority of the cast members from the first film. In addition, he appeared in Dave Bautista's epic thriller in Final Score.
Brosnan executive produced and starred in the heist caper The Misfits, directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Robert Henry and Kurt Wimmer in 2021. Critics also disliked the film when it was launched. He co-wrote and co-produced False Positive's horror film False Positive opposite Ilana Glazer, who co-wrote and co-produced it. The film was a modest success.
In the DC Extended Universe film, Black Adam, Brosnan was cast as Doctor Fate/Kent Nelson in March 2021. In July 2021, he starred Adam Devine in the Netflix action-comedy film The Out-Laws directed by Tyler Spindel.

Brosnan is set to appear in a historical period piece based on Jonathan Miles' book The Wreck of The Medusa, set against the backdrop of the early 19th century during King Louis XVIII's reign in France, with Peter Webber directing the film. During an interview in October 2020, Webber said that the lack of enthusiasm in "artist" in the market resulted in numerous setbacks, and as such, the project is still in process.

A mural featuring an artist's rendering of Grand Admiral Thrawn with a strong resemblance to Brosnan was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration 2019 in Chicago, fueling rumors about a future role in the Star Wars franchise.
